    Midfield - downwind

I read it as follows: 1. he was asked to report 3 southwest 2. he reported 3 southwest 3. he was asked to report midfield downwind I'm not sure if you were agreeing with my take, or thought that I didn't understand what "report midfield downwind" means. My comment was that they obviously...

    Midfield - downwind

I guess I don't mind kicking a dead horse, so here's my take: There is a guy on final to 11, which would put him NW of the field by some amount. You are SW of the field, inbound. At 3 miles out you are asked to report midfield downwind. It's safe to assume he wants a right downwind, but you...

Stolen King Air still flying as of 8:38am on Sat (9-3-22)

Hopefully it won't end in more than one fatality. (Obviously no fatalities would be best)

Stolen King Air still flying as of 8:38am on Sat (9-3-22)

Apparently a 29-year old stole a King Air and threatened to crash it into Wal-Mart in Tupelo. As of this post, he is still flying. He's staying at around 1000 MSL. https://flightaware.com/live/flight/N342ER

    Avidyne 10.3 is finally out

I did the update on my IFD-540 last night. I won't be able to flight test it until Monday. I'm looking forward to trying out the new features.

Engine Operation — What’s best for longevity?

You are thinking about it wrong. It's a two-step process: 1. You set %power desired with throttle (and prop control if you have a constant-speed prop). You'll use your tables and adjust for temperature for those settings. 2. Now you lean for proper fuel/air ratio at your selected power...

Engine Operation — What’s best for longevity?

, and "...a bit rich of peak EGT" is not where you want to be. If you look at the Lycoming graph, you'll see that CHTs actually increase as you move to the rich side of peak EGT, peaking at around 75deg ROP, then they drop off again. 100 to 125 deg ROP is considered the MAX power setting...

    Drinking while flying...

Just ordered. I'm not screwing that into the plane, but I'll make some kind of hook or bracket to hang it from the sidewall. I like that it folds up. For less than 6 bucks it's worth a shot.

Flight Review question? What would you Pick?

Okay. I looked this up. The accident occurred in 2012. The density altitude was 9200, which is 3200' beyond the performance charts. The pilot was asked by the investigator about the use of the mixture control, and the pilot said the aircraft could not be leaned for takeoff (really?). He...

Help me understand people selling stuff.

My experience has always been that the baseline price for something used is 50% of the new price. That's the starting point. Specific circumstances such as overall age and condition may move the target up or down a bit. I share the OP's confusion of why someone would pay $800 for a used Bose...

    Air-to-Air Piper Dakota

The lack of a good straight-on shot was my only regret from my photo shoot with Jack. In hindsight, we should've briefed the maneuver on the ground in more detail. Something as simple as "at some point, I'll ask you to slip the plane with the nose directed toward the photo ship so I can get a...

    Play in Cherokee stabilator

Don't fly that plane. It's an easy fix to replace the bushings. Someone found some play in my stabilator many years ago, and I promptly had it fixed. I check on every pre-flight now. Watch the following video if you want to get chills down your spine:
