Total Solar Eclipse on Monday, April 8, 2024

What’s the appeal of the eclipse that it’s worth giving up sun and fun for? It gets dark for a few minutes during the day and that’s it. I just don’t see the appeal of planning a whole vacation just to experience a few minutes of darkness caused by the normal cycles of earth and the moon.

Daughter wants a fun car, dad wants something more practical.

As I said in my post, if interested in a mini you need to avoid the earlier years and also be comfortable doing maintenance yourself. A 2009 R56 mini with either the turbo or super charger are not reliable at all. The newer Gen 3 minis (2016+) are completely different and just as reliable as...

    Oshkosh Group (Airplane) Camping?

Just note that if you are flying in and camping in Scholler that usually means tent camping. EAA has virtually eliminated any decent spot that you are allowed to setup a tent with their ever increasing 24 hour generator and water/electric areas. You are not allowed to put a tent up in any of...

Daughter wants a fun car, dad wants something more practical.

Define practical and fun. Does it need to seat more than 2 people? Does it need to be 4wd? Is gas mileage a concern? Do you work on the cars yourself or do you bring it to a mechanic for everything? A used civic Si or Type R would be fun to drive, practical and mostly reliable. On the...

Looks Ugly ... Pilot Has Minor Injuries

If you takeoff and the engine stumbles most pilots are going to tend to turn left to get back to the airport because that is how the vast majority of traffic patterns are. In a high stress situation people tend to revert to rote instincts. Maybe right was a better option but if you dont think...

Viking 130 engine failure at 1150 hours

How do you know owners are happy with them or that they arent having failures and issues not reported through an ntsb accident report?? The developer highly moderates his own forum and a few others as a moderator to delete anything negative posyed and has gone after other builders who tried to...

Looks Ugly ... Pilot Has Minor Injuries

Nothing wrong with the aerovee itself. Failures due to internal components are exceedingly rare on that motor. I won’t fly behind the aerocarb that powers most of them anymore though. Way too many sonex with engine failures right after takeoff. Even the factory has had two of their aircraft...

    Podcasts

Not aviation related but Radiolab always has something interesting. Even my teenage daughter likes it. The Moth is also good if you like short storytelling type of podcasts.

What DON'T I know about paint?

Look at the redcoat and application windows for both the clear and the color. You either need to spray the clear in a very narrow time window or you need to do some prep to the color after letting it dry for a much longer period of time.

Student pilot who conned his Gf into buying a tripacer- & killing her in subsequent accident-finally arrested.

Having a license or medical wouldn’t have prevented this particular accident. It’s what everyone wants to focus on but leaving a fuel cap loose or running out of fuel has happened to many other pilots. Guy sounds like a bit of a scum bag with an anti authority attitude but that’s not what...

I'd say someone got signed off to solo a bit early...

I felt that very same way on my first solo and I suspect many others did too. It felt like a really bad idea as soon as I leveled off and had time to realize nobody was sitting next to me to catch my mistakes anymore The difference is that there wasn’t a tower there to hear it or the internet...

    Treat oil leaks seriously

You made my point. If the engine is leaking then something is wrong. It doesn't mean that the airplane needs to be immediately grounded but the mechanic needs to at least inspect the engine and figure out what is leaking and why. From there they can figure out how important it is to fix the...

Charged With DUI When I Wasn’t Driving

I'm certainly not one who supports the sovereign citizen thing but you may still want to question why the courts are setup so you must hire a lawyer at hundreds of dollars an hour to have any chance of winning a case. Anything outside small claims court it is almost impossible to represent...

Charged With DUI When I Wasn’t Driving

It's because out legal system is setup so the only way you have any chance of winning a case is by paying a lawyer. People don't like having to pay vast sums of money to someone just to defend themselves. Lawyers aren't cheap and most people would prefer to not use one but they have...

    Treat oil leaks seriously

Engines aren’t designed to leak. If they do then something is wrong. If a mechanic tells me it’s just a leaky engine, can’t tell me where the leak is coming from and does nothing more than check the oil level I think I would be finding another mechanic. You are lucky you didn’t kill someone...

    [NA]Where can I buy a 1/4” wide dipstick

If you just need the metal then try searching for 1/4 wide spring steel. Amazon seems to have a bunch of options.

Thank goodness for ADS-B in and Foreflight

Show me a transponder and adsb that can be bought for 1-2k. It doesn't exist.

Thank goodness for ADS-B in and Foreflight

My sonex has no ADSB. Neither does the cub I got my tail wheel endorsement in. I’m in Ct right between the busy New York and Boston airspace with a class C at Bradley right in the middle. You would be surprised at how much airspace is out there that doesn’t require a transponder or ADSB to be...

Thank goodness for ADS-B in and Foreflight

That’s a dangerous assumption and setting yourself up to have a bad and potentially lethal habit. You will carry that same assumption subconsciously even when outside class B and some day it may end up biting you. The worst part about ADSB is that it has taught pilots to look inside the...

Thank goodness for ADS-B in and Foreflight

Not criticizing but how did you not see the other airplane when coming into the pattern and were they not making any radio calls? ADSB is great but too many pilots rely on it and forget that there are many planes still flying legally without it.
