Ya know, I had the GoPro running just to capture the moments I punched in and broke out. I went to snip those moments out of the footage and laughed at how boring an IMC flight video is.

Passed my IR checkride a week ago, and took my first solo flight into IMC yesterday morning, a short round robin flight from KSTC to KPEX.

So, student pilots.. Who are we and where do we stand?

Looks like I'm a member of the League of Temporary Airmen once again. Instrument checkride went very well.

Assistance: 3-minute marks on pilot’s chronographs watches

Something 45mm or larger and very shiny so there's no confusion who's the acting PIC.

So, student pilots.. Who are we and where do we stand?

Congrats and thanks, I'm feeling cautiously optimistic. I came into IR with well over 50 hours PIC cross country time, so we got to spend pretty much every lesson flying back to back approaches and managed to log a few hours of actual. I hired a sharp, experienced CFII in his 70s and flew with...

So, student pilots.. Who are we and where do we stand?

My instrument checkride is on Monday. The DPE has a real sense of humor: he assigned a cross country to KOSH, so I'm not at Airventure but I'm sitting here pouring over the NOTAM.

    Wooden propellers for all engines

That's correct, I did ultimately insert new plugs and machine the hub correctly so I could commence engine break-in while I waited for a propeller from a reputable manufacturer. Putting aside all quibbling about the refund, the packaging and shipping, and the protracted timeline, let's remember...

    Wooden propellers for all engines

Just in case anyone wants to read a fun story: I needed a prop last summer. Open cockpit airplane, so I was hoping I could find a suitable propeller in a reasonable timeframe and not miss out on flying the rest of the season. Culver, etc. have a long backlog, so I took a chance with Meglin...

Anyone else building a wood airplane?

Not sure why that would be - I've seen several powered by O-235s and O-290s. I'm a large pilot - about 275 lbs - and I still have over 200 lbs of useful load remaining. With me sitting in the rear hole, the airplane's CG was about an inch aft of the allowable limit prescribed by the Fisher...

Anyone else building a wood airplane?

Mine has an O-235-L2C and no wing tanks. It burns about 5.5 GPH, leaving me with about 90 mins of endurance with legal VFR reserves. I'm ready to get out and stretch by then, anyway, especially if it's midday and I'm getting bounced around. Needs a pilot upgrade more than anything else...

Anyone else building a wood airplane?

Glad you're still working on it. I own a Celebrity and it's a fun little airplane.

So, student pilots.. Who are we and where do we stand?

If you have any mental downtime where you're just performing menial labor or whatever, wear earbuds and listen to checkride mock oral interviews on youtube. I did that while cutting grass, driving, etc for a couple weeks leading into my Private checkride and the oral portion was extremely easy...

I was given these old geodetic wood wings after a friend's father learned I had purchased a Fisher. They had been sitting in his barn's hayloft for years, so it took quite a bit of cleaning to get them ready for display. Rigging them from the hangar ceiling without a helper was a pretty tedious...

Cessna 172P Gear Leg Shake On Takeoff

I have gotten in the habit of tapping the brakes as soon as I'm off the ground in a 172.

Flying a biplane to a deserted grass strip (05Y - Henning, MN) feels like steeping through a portal to a bygone era. Put a couple more hours of actual in the logbook this week, too.

    Dan Gryder Lockheed Electra Crash

Those were Gryder's words. He's taking a swipe at Thomas Juan Browne ("blancolirio.") I'm not really sure how being a Part 121 First Officer makes someone less qualified than a Captain to comment on neglecting a checklist item and running an antique airplane off the side of a grass strip and...

    Hangar prices.

At my home airport (untowered, rural Minnesota,) the T hangars with southern exposure command a premium of $25/mo because of the extra hassle of snow and ice removal from the shaded north-facing T hangars. Other than that, everyone pays the same rate. The cost is laughably low compared to...
