    RRRRRRRough River 2023! (2I3 4/21/2023 - 4/23/2023)

Sounds good Dave. Glad to fly with you and Melodie. I’ll figure our departure time based on check in time for our room.

    RRRRRRRough River 2023! (2I3 4/21/2023 - 4/23/2023)

I'll be leaving KCVC (east side of Atlanta) Friday 21st in C414 up to 2I3. Have room. (if you'd like to share gas, you'll be happy to know I fly LOP)

    Bonanza V-Tail or Mooney M20x or ??

Somehow or other you need to actually fly in an example of the types you're considering. With your wife if possible. I have about 1,000 hours in Mooneys, but no longer have one so no dog in the M/B fight. However, I have given many pilots their first rides in a Mooney. Every one was pleasantly...

"Traffic to follow, report in sight"

Yes of course I said negative contact. And I wasn’t about to fly a 20 mile downwind. What I didn’t like was the controller acting upset with me that I didn’t see the traffic.

"Traffic to follow, report in sight"

My beef. Night, cleared for the visual IFR approach. I’m on downwind and tower says I’m following a Cherokee on final, advise in sight. Well in the haze and with city background lights I never saw him and continued on downwind. The controller in an exasperated voice tells me the Cherokee is over...

    RRRRRRRough River 2023! (2I3 4/21/2023 - 4/23/2023)

Hah, that would work just fine. Dave, I'm sure that we can arrange that ride. And if anyone else from ATL area wants to share let me know.

San Jose CA to Atlanta GA instrument training

Hal, I'm an ATL based CFII with P210 time and might consider doing this. But my schedule is pretty full right now. Is this something you need to do immediately? Feel free to PM me if you want.

    RRRRRRRough River 2023! (2I3 4/21/2023 - 4/23/2023)

Sue had a follow up visit with her ortho surgeon today. "No restrictions. See you in 6 months." Still moves pretty slowly, so I'm a little concerned about getting from airstrip to lodge to cabins, but we'll be there.

    414 Back Home - Yeah

    A. Sue’s doing well. She moves slowly and carefully but gets around fine. Not sure how we’ll manage back and forth from lodge to cabins at Rough River. Just have to make it happen B. I still have one probably large invoice yet to come. So don’t know full financial damage. Definitely a lot...

    414 Back Home - Yeah

Three and a half weeks ago I had a turbo fail in flight and diverted to KAEX Alexandria, LA. I wrote that up earlier. Yesterday afternoon I was finally able to return my 414 to its hangar in Covington, GA. I’ve been in general aviation for a long time, and those three weeks are an ode how...

Broken removal tab for the Garmin NavData card

Mine broke too. Found a spot where I could drill a tiny hole and made a loop with safety wire allowing me to pull it out. Look at the lower 430 and you can see what I did.

Avionics Shop Recommendations - Midwest / Southeast

You ought to talk to Southern Air Group at Covington KCVC. They’re a Garmin Platinum dealer, and I’ve seen and flown some awesome installs they’ve done. Tell Steve or Cole I sent you.

    Turbo Failed at FL210

Bingo. The standby AI went crazy just as we left. The factory CHT gauges aren’t connected to probes so they go full scale. I wanted the JPI engine monitor probe to have the proper hole in that cylinder. Wives wear underwear???

    Turbo Failed at FL210

Excellent observation and question. (BTW there’s another Easter egg in there for the sharp eyed). When flying a twin you’re accustomed to having two levers in your hand. It feels unnatural to just be holding one. The engine’s shut down anyway so it’s not an issue to have them both where they...

    Turbo Failed at FL210

414 still in Louisiana. A little delay waiting on the correct turbo attachment bolts. Hopefully can recover the plane next week. Still stressed.

    Turbo Failed at FL210

Actually we didn’t put in any rudder trim and flew hands off until short final. 3100 has yaw damp. Very little rudder needed while flying. Taxiing on one was another matter.

    Bahamas Fly-Out Roll Call

With my plane stuck in Louisiana I don't think there's any way we can make this one. I just hope I get this plane recovered in time for Rough River.

Thought process for Emergency Descents: Vno or Va?

My C414 POH describes two emergency descents…one (described as the preferred procedure) clean at Vne in smooth conditions @225kcas no bank and another at V gear and flaps extended @ 140kcas 45 deg bank. I’ve done both in the sim and I don’t care how smooth the air seems to be I’m putting gear...

    Turbo Failed at FL210

At FL210 there was no power. And one can only guess at what caused the problem. Continuing under these conditions is a dangerous idea IMO. With an engine failure in a light twin that second engine is there to get you to the nearest suitable airport...no more. Should we have continued and...

    Turbo Failed at FL210

Didn’t seize. The bearing or shaft between compressor and turbine wheels failed. They’re both independently rattling around in their housings. As to why, that’s the $64k question. We’re planning a lot of troubleshooting besides putting in another turbo before I blast off.
