    Henning gone west

Well….I was laying over on a Hawker trip in Ft Lauderdale once and the other pilot and I took him out to dinner. Meh. Totally dullsville. Maybe he was having an off day.

Tool to fix 430W/530W Terrain cards

I have two bad terrain cards. Ran them both through this app today and then was able to update them in the Garmin manager. Great I said. Then I put them into their two 530Ws. Guess what. The cards weren’t recognized. Back on the phone to Garmin tomorrow. Sigh.

The one labeled 123023-1 is from my Teslong. The other is from my Vividia 400. I think the color is much truer on the Teslong and the clarity better.

What single engine trainer to buy?

We bought a wrecked 172 for $19,000. Had that engine overhauled so we could do a quick swap (plane was out of service only 3 days) and sold off about everything else. The overhaul was $30,000.

    Borescope Advice

I’m down in FL for a few days escaping the Atlanta cold (33 kts tailwind flying down here). When I’m back I’ll post my valve pix using the Vividia and the Teslong. The Teslong is vastly superior. Two Vividi’s have failed me and the picture quality is bad. I’m glad I sprung for the Teslong.

What single engine trainer to buy?

Another independent instructor and I bought a high time 172N in April, 2021 to have a plane at our airport to train in. No flight school at our airport. I am amazed at how good the 172 is as a trainer. Its usage wildly exceeds any expectations we had when we bought the thing. We've had virtually...

Glider Pilot vs. Private Pilot Skills

I have 600 hours glider time (and am a CFIG) with many of those hours cross country and contest time. It's a very challenging and enjoyable SPORT. I have another 5,000 hours in powered planes (and am a CFII). I consider most of those hours to be a challenging and enjoyable way to TRAVEL. I...

Finally changing engine at 3500 SMOH

Just flew the plane. 3 days from cowls off to back in the air with fresh engine. Not too bad. Engine has a lot more power! I guess they get tired after 3500 hours. Idle is too low and oil pressure too high. Both easily adjusted tomorrow. I’m reasonably happy. The 414 took 6 months.

Finally changing engine at 3500 SMOH

We don’t plan to overhaul very soon. That would mean having an expensive overhaul sitting around slowly corroding even if we used the best pickling methods available. When we do, I’m glad to share results. IMO though the crank is one of the toughest parts of the engine. I doubt it will show much...

Finally changing engine at 3500 SMOH

????? I don’t have a POH here at home, but every recollection I have is 2000 TBO for this engine. I Googled it and every reference says 2000.

Finally changing engine at 3500 SMOH

No it burned nothing but 100LL. We tried to change oil and filter every 50 hours. Sometimes we made it. We have no CHT or EGT gauges, but I impress on all my students to lean in cruise to a slight power loss and then turn the mixture in one full turn. Aggressively lean on the ground. Biggest...

Finally changing engine at 3500 SMOH

When I sold the Mooney this summer its Lycoming IO360A3B6D was at its 2,000 TBO with original cylinders and no indication of being tired at all. Low oil consumption, high 70 diff pressure in all 4 and good looking boroscope pix. New owner has been flying it plenty since and has no current plans...

Finally changing engine at 3500 SMOH

It‘s the mighty 160hp O-320-H2AD. we didn’t exchange the old one. We’d bought a wrecked 172 last summer and sold just about everything but the engine. Had the engine rebuilt so had it sitting on pallet ready to go yesterday. Expect to be flying on Monday. (and we have a tired engine ready for...
