Austin, TX from above - what to see?

Actually, I have done the LBJ Library a few years ago when I went to a football game (my alma mater USC got beat pretty badly). Found it very interesting.

Austin, TX from above - what to see?

I arrive on Delta at AUS 9/12 6:37pm. Have to be at KEDC the next morning at 10:30am. Don't want to rent a car. Guess I should Uber to downtown and stay there. Thanks Spike.

    Kitty Hawk. KFFC

So appreciate the help. Great comments. One last question. Looks like solid MOAs, restricted and warning areas between KMRH and KFFA. Would flight following from Cherry Point App or filing IFR be a good/necessary idea? BTW I'll be at Beaufort next week from the 13th to 16th and would go to FFA...

    Kitty Hawk. KFFC

3,000’ is ok. Landing and not being able to park, not so good. What day of the week were you there? Wondering if that would make a difference.

    Kitty Hawk. KFFC

I’m in Beaufort, NC from 8/13 to 8/16. Would go up to KFFC in there sometime if i decide to do it.

Austin, TX from above - what to see?

I too am looking for some local Austin knowledge. I have to fly commercial into AUS in the evening, stay overnight and then go to KEDC to fly a plane there. Any area between those airports with good hotel and good restaurant(s) walking distance from the hotel? I’ll Uber to and from the airports.

    Kitty Hawk. KFFC

I’ll be in the area of Kitty Hawk (KMRH) and would like to see it. Anyone on here familiar with First Flight airport? Need to know if it would be a problem landing a C414 there. Is there enough parking space, for example. Any advice is appreciated.

    Talk to me about glasses

Just as a data point, nothing more, I've worn progressives for years. Flown everything from Learjets to gliders and everything in-between. Have both sunglasses and clear. Works for me. And I have no problem getting 2nd class medical.

Abort - was lunch at KGMU 7/28.

I’m always up for a run to GMU rain (no TS) or shine, but Sunday morning is church for me.

    Part 61 - Number of CFI's

Just for fun I Googled rating flight instructors. BoldMethod has a page listing the top 10 qualities they say the best instructors have several or all of. Here’s the link https://www.boldmethod.com/blog/lists/2021/09/the-best-flight-instructors-always/ I know I sure strive for all of these. But...

    Part 61 - Number of CFI's

I've got to jump in and comment on the Pt 61 bashing. Another independent instructor and I have a C172N that we purchased to provide primary and instrument instruction under pt 61. First, we maintain it meticulously because a) it's mine, b) my a*s is in it a fair amount of time and c) it's the...

    Moving GAMInjectors

Actually for around 100 bucks GAMI will reactivate that engine account for another year and will keep swapping injectors until you’re happy at no additional cost. But if you make sure the old injectors are put on the same cylinders in the OH engine, it may still be right on.

Five members of Georgia family killed (Piper PA-46 crash)

This accident made the front page of this morning's Atlanta Journal Constitution newspaper. The families involved need all the compassion we could imagine. OTH this makes general aviation look BAD. Just don't be the next guy to make headlines like this. Fly safely; fly conservatively; use common...

Five members of Georgia family killed (Piper PA-46 crash)

Sorry but to me this checks three of the five FAA dangerous attitude boxes- impulsivity, invulnerability and macho. In unstable air like this area had another cell could pop up from nothing to really bad “behind the trailing edge” within the latency time of nexrad. There have been too many...

Five members of Georgia family killed (Piper PA-46 crash)

This makes me angry. My 414 has onboard Garmin weather radar, ADSB-In NEXRAD, Sirius/XM NEXRAD and a storm scope (and I know how to use them all.), but with convective TS I still stay visual… IFR or not. ATC will work with you. If you must fly into a TS, do it solo. Don’t take innocent kids with you.

    Baron or Duke?

Nothing cooler looking than a Duke. No question. However it’s tight inside and the engines are very expensive and problematic to overhaul. Check the lead time on a cylinder. I’d encourage you and spouse to checkout a Cessna 340 or 414. I know…it’s not a Beechcraft. But it might be a much more...

    Out of my comfort zone

Final chapter. I flew the Extra today. Wow. Started with an extensive briefing-almost an hour covering a lot of the physics of what we'd been doing. Very well presented and will make me a better instructor. The Extra is an amazing aircraft. The ailerons extend almost the entire wingspan and then...

    Recommendations for flying into Atlanta

That’s not good and is quite surprising. When was this? Maybe a long time ago or you got very unlucky. Sorry it happened.

No, I did mean KCVC Covington where I’m based.

    Out of my comfort zone

The “Look” part is very important and frankly was tough to incorporate. When you’re faced with unusual attitude, you tend to just look straight ahead and get tunnel vision. If you’re pitched way down, you look at those trees or whatever and the primal instinct is to pull. And there go the wings...
