Chronic maintenance issues on Cessna Twins

Company called D’Shannon has numerous STCs for improving mainly Beechcraft types. A couple of the most popular are baffle improvement kits that lower CHTs on the hottest cylinders. Twin Cessnas suffer the same problem. If you developed a baffle mod that lowered the CHTs of #3 and #4 in cruise...

Chronic maintenance issues on Cessna Twins

You need to be more specific. There are numerous iterations of the 310, 320, 404, 414, 414A, 340A, 421A, B and C (just to name a few "twin Cessnas"). Each has its own list of things to consider.

    Cessna 340A pressurization question

I have no problem descending at 1,000fpm (or more if needed) leaving the engines at cruise power settings (31” mp/ 2350rpm) in my 414 which had the same engines as a 340. Never gets the airspeed into the yellow. This keeps the pressurization air flowing and lets the controller lower the...

iOS 18 Text Messages via Satellite

I’ve used it down low and up to FL190. Works great but you’ve got to aim your phone at the satellite. Your screen shows where the satellite is. Pretty cool and free is good.

    Hangar Monthly Rent

For another Atlanta data point…After 4 ½ years on waitlist an acquaintance just got a t-hangar at PDK for $530/month.

    Hangar Monthly Rent

Fortuitously with no great planning on my part I built a 60x50 hangar on a ground lease with the city of Covington at KCVC about 20 years ago. Was $160/month then and is still about that. Just signed a 25 year lease for it which allows a whopping 1% a year increase. So I’m good until I’m 101...

    And so it goes..

As someone who Bruce helped get through this calcium score mess, I will confirm…don’t do this calcium scan.

What age is appropriate to start flight lessons?

My son’s first logged lesson was at 5½ in the front of a Blanik L13 glider. As a CFIG I could do stuff like that. Fun memories.

    Orlando?

Anyone in Orlando the next couple of days? I’ve got to hang around from tomorrow Monday noon to Wednesday morning with nothing particular to do. Staying downtown.

    Liability Only Insurance

Did some research because insurance is a huge problem for me. This AOPA “announcement “ is NOTHING new. Liability only has been available for a long time. And regardless Global won’t cover twins at all which is where the big issue is for us 70+ pilots. AOPA has done absolutely nothing to help...

Twin Ownership - Year 1 The ups and downs

Hmm, maybe I should write up years 2 to 7. Still flying it over 100 hours a year, still taking the granddaughters to the beach (they are friggen spoiled), overhauled the right engine last year (left one still going strong), still doing annual recurrent training (have used, RST, AST and...

    Leaning during climb

I have it set to be around 32 gph at cruise climb settings (35” 2500rpm) with mixture levers full forward. This gives me the flexibility to put in more fuel than my standard 28gph on high ISA days or when a steeper climb is needed

    Leaning during climb

Not on my engines (TCM TSIO520NB). Everything forward (takeoff power) is 41", 2700 rpm and 38 gph. I'd run out of gas before I reached cruise altitude. Per the book cruise climb is 35" 2500rpm and 28gph. At around 130ktas this also conveniently gives me max CHTs of 380. I believe a lot of turbos...

Instrument Approach Gear and Flap Sequence - A survey

I'm going to politely disagree with this one. 1) Speed is not necessarily your friend. Speed is kinetic energy that must be dissipated to land. Excess speed can send you off the end of the runway. (Example: The Dale Earnhardt Jr. crash). 2) Yes, you can get away with this in a 172 or a Hershey...

Voepass Flight 2283, a large passenger plane, crashes in Vinhedo, Brazil

I am not aware of any non centerline thrust multi engine civilian aircraft certified for spins. Zero. All pilot training and higher level avionics (stick shakers and stick pushers) are to avoid a spin in the first place. There’s just not enough rudder authority to overcome the moment arm of the...
