    Cessna 182 Avionics upgrade

I'd feel most comfortable with two independent approach-capable navigation sources.

    Lipo battery fire containment bags

That all makes great sense anywhere but aviation. How many times have you used CO2 in an enclosed space the size of an aircraft cabin? The FAA, NFPA, EAA, everyone recommends against using CO2 in aviation. Quote from AC 20-42D:

    Lipo battery fire containment bags

Here's another good article on why CO2 is inferior to Halon for aviation: https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/pdf/EAA_FIRE5.pdf As far as I can tell Aircraft Spruce doesn't even sell CO2 extinguishers for cockpit use.

    Lipo battery fire containment bags

The greenhouse gas warming potential of my Halon 1211 extinguisher is about equal to filling the plane 3 times. If there's an in-flight fire I won't be worrying about that. Re: fog I can't see how this would be worse in a non-pressurized aircraft than a pressurized one. If the ventilation isn't...

    Lipo battery fire containment bags

Start at 4:24. Is there something I'm missing here? My understanding is that Halon won't harm instruments, won't impede visibility, won't leave any residue, and won't asphixiate. What's not to like (aside from destroying the Ozone, of course)? YMMV.

    Alternator kaput?

Can't catch a break with you, can I? The express point of this language is to signal lack of certainty. How can one learn if one is sure? Rest of the post is very nice, thank you for the explanations. I've asked A&Ps to inspect my Rapco vanes and they gave me a blank stare. Not sure...

    Alternator kaput?

Doesn't this depend on what the failure curve looks like for a given component, though? If failure is a memoryless (Poisson) process, for instance, then early replacement offers no benefit (of course everything wears out in practice so this is only true to a point). Worse, if the part is subject...

    GI 275 database sync

Hope it works via USB. I’m so excited to ditch the BadElf I use for my 430s; the last thing I need is another janky wireless update experience.

    Communication between shops and customers

Whenever I drop the plane off an always send an email outlining everything I want done and expectations. After any visit or call I send a follow-up email outlining our conversation and decisions made. I keep these friendly but also ensure they are explicit on what work I’m approving.

    Good book for student pilot

Not a notebook but I have a CheckMate that I quite like (for my Arrow): https://www.checkmateaviation.com/cessna-152.html 99% of the time I use Foreflight with custom checklists that have all the unnecessary stuff removed, but it's nice to have a physical backup in the plane. Having a nice...

    Alternator kaput?

Is the alternator light illuminated? This wasn’t mentioned in the post but I guess it’d be notable if it weren’t.

    Alternator kaput?

Did you check bus voltage with the alt switch on? Wondering if it’s an indication error. I’d have to double check the wiring diagram (assuming this is an Arrow) but I don’t think turning the master off (assuming that’s what battery switch means) allows running off the alternator even if it is...

    Good book for student pilot

As you’re reading the FAR AIM I’d recommend having some stickies handy to mark it up. I guess it could help during the exam but also physically organizing the book is a great memory aid.

    Good book for student pilot

The PHAK is an enchanting thing to read for the first time. I remember poring over it during when I was pre-solo. Hard to think of a better document written by the government (and available for free, no less!).

    Good book for student pilot

I was about to recommend this exact book til I saw your comment. I have the IFR one but I imagine it’s similar.

    GI 275 database sync

:hairraise::hairraise::hairraise: Are you saying you were able to install database updates via USB and they pushed from the 275 to the 750? This is incredible! I was told it couldn’t be done (that it only worked 650-> 275) and was very unhappy because I’d rather not have to carry take the...

    Oil filter change interval

Gotcha. So would a bypass filter mostly only help for short operation? During a long flight the crankcase should reach equilibrium moisture content either way. I suppose that during low-power ops at the end of the flight the bypass filter could absorb extra moisture so when you power off the...

Took off on one mag accidentally - did I hurt my engine?

Very well-put. I like to think I'd remember to expect worsening roughness from carb heat (it's written all over the place and Piper AFMs clearly state to wait after applying heat). Not trusting myself on this was one reason to pick an IO engine. The carb heat issue reminds me of Kahneman's...
