    My wife got hurt

Sorry to read this. Best in her recovery.

    Finally restarted my flying lessons.

How'd you drop the 40? I have about 2x that to lose and it's overwhelming. I'm focusing on 10 to start.

Passed the IFR written test today!!!

Is $800 the going rate? I think back in 2008 it was $300. I guess they double every 7-years or so. Wow.

    Maybe I shouldn't fly? Downwind.

Could you maybe fly everyday for a week? Or 3x or something? I'm not saying three 5 hour flights, but go through the motions of preflighting, starting, taxiing, leaving and finding your airport and then tying down? Less than an hour flight (probably more than an hour at the airport)? Do that...

    Pilots are awesome

@asicer YES!!! I fueled a plane once in 1992 before I was allowed to solo. I've watched the plane get fueled at PWK and 3CK . . . From the truck! That's how I knew to go to the furthest wing, to clamp the ground to the exhaust etc. But the meter and pump switch are right together on the back...

    Pilots are awesome

@Tools ive been pumping car gas since full service went away. Lots of different pumps over the years. I just couldn't quite figure this one out as a first timer. But now I've got this pump nailed (they billed me twice). On to the next self serve pump to look foolish again!!!!

    Pilots are awesome

@Tools interesting observation. Generally - renters (including club members) aren't as invested and spend much less time at the airport. They also spend less time with owners, generally. Need to be there to become part of the crew. You have to invest the time.

    Pilots are awesome

I got self service fuel for the first time in the plane today. 29-years (but only 450 hrs) later and I did it! Connected the ground wire to the exhaust. Dragged the ladder over and the fuel hose to the furthest tank. Put my card in, read all the instructions. Card reader said "follow...

    Pilots are awesome

That's pretty cool! Flying with other non-CFI pilots makes me anxious. So much judgement!!! what if he had thumpers instead of squeakers? Too much stress.

How much do you spend monthly/annually on flying

I've budgeted $7,500 the past few years as a renter and haven't hit it. No time with family obligations /kids sports and work. Just joined a club. Budgeting the same $7,500 for 2023 would get me 45 hrs in a pretty nice 172 or 35 hrs in a 182. $170/month fixed fee plus $125/hr 172 w/fuel...

    Finally restarted my flying lessons.

What are you training in again? An LSA? Are you choosing to alternate CFIs or is that a scheduling issue? While it is good to get differing opinions, you'll get to solo sooner sticking with one. A bit extreme but I think I had 8 CFIs and they would assign me whomever was available when I...

    Finally restarted my flying lessons.

You have more everyday than me! Outside loading YE pax and then pizza would knock me out. Hope the lesson was fun and I'm so happy about your wife's progress.

    Man up or not?

My $0.02 in a pretty large metro area - renting the 6-seater isn't that easy. Similar to what @MIFlyer said - not widely available. And then there is being current (to rent when needed without a CFI recurrency flight) and proficient is a different animal too. Lots of folks suggest it, but I...

    Man up or not?

The comments around buying are good insight. Which 6-seat retract are you seeing for $70k? On the Cherokee 6 partnership, which also seems like a deal at a $100k valuation (is there a note against the plane at that valuation?) - let's say each partner flies your same 50 hours. All during the...

    Unnecessarily Long Bahamas Trip Write-Up

@Michelle R welcome to POA. This is a really old post but I hadn't seen it before, so thanks for bumping this necropost back to the living. @mcmanigle - great write up. Have been back since?

Choosing a "public benefit" flying organization

@OneCharlieTango I hear what you are saying. I'm sure the situations you describe exist. I haven't had any experience with these organizations (I don't own a plane and haven't flown enough) but I do have a soft spot for (1) people with cancer and (2) limited resources. Several in my dad's...

    Aviation Goals for 2022

Very sobering that Wayne started this thread, had lots of discussion about retirement, finances and flying after wrapping up work THIS YEAR and has gone West. I thought there was a thread about his passing but a simple search didn't highlight it. Sobering. Get er done everyone.

Choosing a "public benefit" flying organization

My very cynical $0.02 I don't really trust anyone. Period. if you, or god forbid your child, has cancer or a similar potentially terminal illness and (1) you think that treatment far away is better or your last / only hope (2) and I have the means to help . . . I don't really care what's...
