Should I buy a plane... or Not?

You have the time and financial resources to fly 4-hrs a day? That's like $4k a week for a 172 rental near me. Wow. I agree with above. What do you enjoy about flying? For me - a Champ or Cub partnership, but with some radios, would be perfect! Low cost. Fun. Nostalgic. I don't have...

    What a Cross Country

That is awesome! A few days in Litchfield IL? What did y'all do there? It is bigger than I thought looking at the map now. Are you instrument rated and current? How did customs go? Do you have to clear Canadian customs on the way home (nothing with US when you're leaving, right?)...

    Engine Heater

@flyingcheesehead how do you vent the crankcase for a mechanically challenged person? Pull a spark plug after the flight?

age at solo vs hours to solo

I was 18. Probably 40 hours and a year in? Lots of instructors because that's how the school worked. I asked for a time and they scheduled me with whomever was there. I soloed on the 3rd flight after being assigned an instructor. You don't know what you don't know. If I was on the internet...

Does ground/clearance delivery know the phrase "learner pilot"?

@nauga this is an actual recommended change? In a government publication (is the Flight Instructor's handbook a sanctioned source or from one of the flight instructor organizations)?

Does ground/clearance delivery know the phrase "learner pilot"?

Say again? Say again all after . . . My 14th primary instructor (1992 - I was 18 at the time) yelled at me for saying student pilot at the end of my transmission with Peoria Approach. He told me how embarrassing it was and to NEVER use it with him onboard and only in an emergency if he...

Thinking About Hanging Up My Spurs

After owning you'll likely not enjoy a club. My $0.02 What about a nice LSA and an RV (camping RV)? Took around for breakfast or early morning flight in the Cub and go golfing, hunting, RVing the other 23 hrs each day. Live the dream brother!!

    Ipad mini for foreflight

@flyingcheesehead - right now, I have no iPad. I have foreflight on an iPhone 8 Plus and paper charts plus the panel mounted 650 (with FlightStream 510 I guess). Can I Bluetooth that to my phone to get traffic on my iPhone foreflight on the air?

    Avionics thefts- Chicago edition

I would think LOT (university airport) is pretty locked down. I know PWK is. All you need is to get someone on the field or stick something through the gate to trip the sensor, though, right? The infrared or whatever senses an outgoing vehicle? Interrupt that and the gate opens.

    Avionics thefts- Chicago edition

Same warning distributed at 3CK and 06C I believe (I saw notices from both).

    Money Managers, useless criters.

I agree with many above. Check out Vanguard or similar low fee index funds. Long-term very few beat the market - so why not just be the market? S&P500 fund or Whole Market fund. Maybe some international and then acquire individual bonds to hold (not trade). Something like that. You got this...

    Ipad mini for foreflight

@Hang 4 so I missed it! I recently joined a club that has a nice (for me) panel. 2 G5s, GTN650 waas (are all 650s waas?) and gtx-345 xpdr with ADS B in/out. Somewhere in this magic I can blue tooth an iPad into the panel and share flight plan information and get traffic and wx out to an...

    Ipad mini for foreflight

I believe Apple Store through Amazon was offering $100 off all models of iPad 6. New. Not refurbished.

    Current loan rates

@robin ardoin congratulations on the new bird! So much more freedom and flexibility as the sole owner. For your Currency Aviation loan - do they have a lien on the plane, or no? I wonder if the rates/ease changes on a 1978 Skylane vs. 2000. Congratulations.

    NOTAM: Missiles inbound

My friend's son is stationed in Japan. He sent me a picture of his DIL and grand daughters under the kitchen table reading their books. Reminded me of my parents hiding under desks in the 1950s.

    Do I have to

@RyanB - although not the OP, I note they said the pilot's family asked OP not to speak. Not the pilot himself. I assume it was serious if the pilot isn't able to, or around to, ask the OP themselves.

How much do you spend monthly/annually on flying

@SethV accurate to say your household earns 7 figures + annually?

Another reason to have personal minimums, and how to push them.

Not IR here . . . But I thought the personal minimums were more designed for off-airport landings in a single. If you have an engine failure, having more than 200 feet and a mile when you pop out the bottom. How do folks address that (honestly). Is the assumption no engine failures in IMC?

Ever have one of those days?

I'm envious of you both! The dream is alive!!! Thank you both for sharing.
