    SID selection & Clearance Delivery

I'd recommend listening on the frequency and if they sound really busy, call AFSS. It's likely that the AFSS phone call will go to a data position instead of the busy radar controller. Otherwise, call the radar controller.

    SID selection & Clearance Delivery

Enroute automation should be providing a SID that's appropriate for the aircraft type, requested altitude, and requested route. When you call for clearance, how often do people have to go back and ask for something different?

Request Advice for Potentially bad interaction with ATC

FAA Order 7110.65 states: 2. If the altitude readout continues to be invalid: (a) Instruct the pilot to turn off the altitude- reporting part of his/her transponder and include the reason; and (b) Notify the operations supervisor-in- charge of the aircraft call sign The OSIC will log the...

    Does ATC know our TOD?

Before the CFM-56 reengine, the DC8's would reverse the 2 inboard engines to slow down and descend simultaneously. A captain told me with the new engines, there was a lot more residual thrust at idle, so it made for a really bumpy ride. Since the passengers didn't like it, they wouldn't do it...

    Does ATC know our TOD?

For me, as was mentioned earlier, it's experience (no calculations involved). Many of our traffic flows were repetitive, so it doesn't take very long to get the hang of it. It helps to know whether an aircraft is a piston or not, as I would try to start them down a little earlier. It's amazing...

As the price of gas at the pump skyrockets

Could somebody help me understand something? Since oil is a global commodity, if the US stops buying oil from Russia (about $8B a year now) won't we buy oil from another country (let's use Mexico for the sake of discussion)? The oil that Mexico sells us comes from: A. Increased production. B...

Lost Comms clarification from you professionals?

It happened at our facility once for about half an hour. Power got accidentally cut to the computers, for a fraction of a second, and everything (radios, radar, and land lines) had to reboot and recertify. Fortunately it was about 12:30 AM and there weren't that many airplanes in the...

Cruising altitude conflicts and barometer settings

A NMAC is defined as an incident associated with the operation of an aircraft in which a possibility of collision occurs as a result of proximity of less than 500 feet to another aircraft, or a report is received from a pilot or a flight crewmember stating that a collision hazard existed between...

"Stand-by" as response for VFR flight following?

I would tell you to "standby" if: 1. I heard your callsign but not the rest of the transmission and was busy with something else. 2. I heard your request but I had higher priority duties that prevented me from saying, "November one two three four radar services terminated, squawk one two zero...
