How much ethanol is too much

Hoses, o-rings and other rubber components were the biggest problem when 10% ethanol was introduced in the automotive world. I can’t remember how long ago that was but it might have been 20 years ago. However, long it has been, there has been time for the rubber materials and fuel systems to...

Gauging risk on an old engine

I expect that such factory packing sealed it pretty well. As long as it didn’t get so soaked that much moisture made it through the packaging, I expect you’re good. If this is a relatively new Lycoming factory or factory reman, it probably has the DLC lifters. Edit: I see on the label an...

Gauging risk on an old engine

I’ve been through the long time stored Lycoming saga and from my experience I wouldn’t put a lot of confidence in such measures. They obviously would help, but the stakes are too high to trust that totally. Only my opinion. I don’t recommend investments to others and I wouldn’t recommend this...

Gauging risk on an old engine

How do you “pickle” a Lycoming to prevent lifter corrosion? The only thing I can think of is to pull the cylinders and coat the lifters with cosmolene or some such.

Gauging risk on an old engine

It will take several oil change cycles for the metal to really show up. Been there, done that on a Lycoming. The only way I would buy that plane is if I could buy it cheap enough to afford a field overhaul and put the new DLC Lifters in it….. OR, if I wanted to personally split the engine...

Restarting training after a pretty long absence

After that length of time away f4om flying an$ with that few hours, you didn’t lose much. Just start from scratch and fly absolutely as frequently as possible.

Tailwheel time...does it matter what its in?

I have about 800 hours tailwheel and about 1200 tailwheel landings. In my way of thinking, my landing number indicates my tailwheel proficiency much more than my tailwheel hours…… but that’s just me.

What is the best way to study for the Instrument Written Test?

I used several different online and video courses, but the Gleim manual worked best once it was all said and done. Cheap too!

    Military Aircraft History

If it still has a military data plate, just do a google search on that number as well as a google search on the current tail number. I don’t know where you would find the military data plate, but on a small plane like that it shouldn’t be hard to find if it hasn’t been removed.

    Air-to-Air Stinsons (Two Tri-Motors & a Gullwing!)

It’s fun seeing these pictures over areas that I frequently fly over low and slow. It was great to see you yesterday Jack. Of the non warbird planes in the museum, the tri motors draw a lot of attention.

    TX coast

If you want a flight museum in Texas, although not near the Beach, go to the Mid America Flight Museum in Mount Pleasant, Tx, KOSA. B25, P51, Bearcat, P40, TBM, Corsair, Huey, LOH, Cobra and many others along with the B17 coming back in the Spring. EVERYTHING is airworthy and gets flown...

    TX coast

The Monday before July Fourth, my son in law and I followed the coast from Galveston all the way to Brownsville. We saw SpaceX from the air and saw how desolate part of Padre Island can be. We ate lunch in Rockport, good airport and good food nearby, but I know nothing about accommodations there.

    TX coast

We have a family beach house at Pirates Beach on Galveston Island so we go there often. It’s a little crowded on holiday weekends, but wonderful otherwise. Lots of hotels with beach view rooms. KGLS is a great airport with a friendly tower and FBO. No courtesy cars, but they will bring your...

$100K? This Giveaway Shows How Out-of-Touch They Are With GA

Well…. I guess that for those expecting their first plane to be a 310 or a Baron, yeah,$100,000 won’t do much, but believe it or not, there are many solid, fun to fly aircraft that can be had for less than that amount. As a previous poster pointed out, you are free to not participate.

    Grounded for not talking

I haven’t read the whole thread, so this may have already been mentioned: There is an inline PTT switch that you can buy from your favorite pilot supply. You simply plug it in when you plug in your headset. The button then velcros in place in a handy location. The PTT switch simply connects...
