    What happened to Southwest?

Not a job action, to be sure. Pilots are sitting back and watching SWA management create their own job action. From just talking to my friends, SWA pilots aren't really willing to go "the extra mile" these days, and I don't blame them. Yes, they're in contract talks that have stalled, yada...

    What happened to Southwest?

If you fly SWA a lot, this shouldn't surprise you. They have a severe technology debt. Their crew scheduling software is from the 90s for a airline the size of SWA back then, not the huge airline it has become. From what friends there have told me, their scheduling software assumes you flew...

USAF charter jet carrying women's b'ball team damages OK airport runway after unauthorized landing

I went to the sim in the Air Force more often than I do at my airline. Twice a year for the AF, at the airlines it's every 9 months.

USAF charter jet carrying women's b'ball team damages OK airport runway after unauthorized landing

Here's the damage that was supposedly caused by the C-17.

USAF charter jet carrying women's b'ball team damages OK airport runway after unauthorized landing

I don't anymore. The first one I found online was from 2008. Then I found this one from 2018. I updated my above post above with new information. They can only be gotten online (as far as I know) if you have an account along with a current CAC (military ID/Common Access Card).

USAF charter jet carrying women's b'ball team damages OK airport runway after unauthorized landing

I can see how this goes. First, whoever things this PPR required is something official, this is usually what happens. I know I have a flight to Stillwater in 5 days, I call the phone number listed. Someone picks up. "Hey, this is Capt Sluggo from Podunk Air Force Base. I'd like to bring a C-17...

USAF charter jet carrying women's b'ball team damages OK airport runway after unauthorized landing

I'm not sure. I just looked and the empty weight of a C-17 is around 282,000. That's a heck of a lot heavier than I thought (just for reference, the EW of a KC-135 is around 122,000). Usually more tires is more better, so a TRT may have a higher limit than the TT 310, but, yeah... this looks...

USAF charter jet carrying women's b'ball team damages OK airport runway after unauthorized landing

They are. It comes down to PCN (Pavement Classification Number) and aircraft weight. The PCN (basically the heaviest an aircraft can be on the pavement there) boils down to wheel configuration. The DoD publishes an IFR Supplement (a lot like the VFR Supplement we're all familiar with) but is...

USAF charter jet carrying women's b'ball team damages OK airport runway after unauthorized landing

That’s not how the Air Force works. Do you think pilots just sit around the squadron waiting to be deployed in order to fly? I flew an average of probably 1-3 times per week when I was on Active Duty. The majority of that was pure training hours. We’d fly 2 hours to hook up with a receiver...

    POA Goes Christmas Caroling

Oh Holy Night is my favorite "classic" Christmas song. For "modern" era, alternative songs: Fairytale of New York.

    Missed Approach Text

How do you fly the X version of this as a traditional ILS if you can't fly the missed approach?

    Missed Approach Text

Maybe I'm not understanding you, but you can't fly this approach without being RNAV-RNP certified. You can't just get the Lat/Longs from another document and plug them into your GPS. Even if you took the time to string all the waypoints together, you are still unable to fly this as depicted...

    Why Can't I Understand Holding Patterns.....@#$%!

This is what I told my students when I was teaching instruments. When you draw it out, draw it like a wind arrow. "Southeast winds" means winds coming from the southeast. So if they start by saying "hold southeast..." draw your hold arrow coming from the southeast direction. Everything else...

    Good steak/dinner spot in Philly?

Obviously, a lot of it comes down to personal preference. Ask 10 guys from Philly what’s the best cheesesteak and you’ll get 12 different answers. And a fist fight.

    Good steak/dinner spot in Philly?

I’d say Max’s is first with Delassandro’s second Edit: was just texting with a buddy still living in Philly. Says Delassandro’s changed hands and now the steaks are ass. Take it off the list. Angelo’s and Sonny’s come in close. Pat’s (and Geno’s across the street) are to cheesesteaks what...
