    No more Airplane Mode, Europe

Yeah. The US. I'm in international security lines, all over the world, and (of the places I've experienced) the absolute worst is the US. Hands down. Maybe other countries are pickier (they're not), but what gets me is the absolute disdain the TSA treats airline passengers with. In other...

    Operation El Dorado Canyon

I read this post yesterday, and was going to comment, but didn't have time. I came back today, and read @Witmo's post. Serendipity. What I was going to write was how, during one of my summers while attending the Colorado School for Wayward Boys, I was sent for 3 weeks to RAF Upper Heyford. It...

Single-pilot airliners and AI (split from "Envoy captain stricken after takeoff and passes")

This is going to be one of the bigger challenges to going single-pilot, in my mind. Right now, we have a pretty good mentor/mentee system, where (usually) less experienced First Officers fly with more experienced Captains. This is where they learn collaboratively from each other, with the...

AP Descent Very Subtle Porpoise During Decent (777-200)

777 guy here. First, I'd say that I don't know if I'd trust the IFE to give you a true representation of the the VVI is at any point in the descent. Did you feel that the airplane was oscillating like that, or were you just going off the IFE altitude display? Next, there are several different...

Single-pilot airliners and AI (split from "Envoy captain stricken after takeoff and passes")

Usually, I would concur. But sometimes they aren't well understood. Here's a Safety Bulletin from our current flight publications, detailing an autothrottle problem that has existed since at least 2016. They still can't figure out the problem. So, basically, the computer on its own decides...

Single-pilot airliners and AI (split from "Envoy captain stricken after takeoff and passes")

RIP to the Captain, and condolences to his family during what must be a devastating time. I can’t even imagine. Having said that, and with all due respect, this incident probably pushed back the “single pilot airliner” back a couple of decades.

    Airliner Deicing Procedure?

You had me in the first half, I really thought you were being sarcastic. Then, I think you weren't... I mean, I love a good airline bashing as much as the next guy, but I wouldn't want facts to get into the way. The Chicago Airport Police beat up a passenger (the why and how it got there has...

    Christmas Gifts...for Europeans

I see that (I think) you're in Georgia. Maybe something small from UGA (or GT). Something like a little mini football helmet: I think something that speaks to where you're from in the US would mean a lot and be an interesting gift for them.

    Christmas Gifts...for Europeans

In all seriousness, I don’t know where you live in the US, but probably something local to you. If you live in the US, Southwest, something dealing with that. It seems Germans are enamored with the US desert SW. Cowboys and Indians and all that. When we lived in Cologne, and locals would find...

    Airliner Deicing Procedure?

Not saying anything about the veracity of these stories I hear, but why is the daughter or friend believed unconditionally, and it's the airline or gate agent that's lying or doesn't understand? Why can't it be "my daughter said... but that doesn't make sense, so maybe she misunderstood what's...

    Interview with an A-10 Pilot

She was a Tweet student in our sister flight when I was an IP at Columbus. Never flew with her, but by all accounts she was the real deal.

    B17 crash at Dallas.

I keep going back to this comment. Are you insinuating that you can perform in an air show like this one, and not actually, physically attend the briefing, just be back-briefed by someone there? If that’s true, I don’t know what to say.

Good luck to you, and congratulations on making what was probably a difficult decision.

    B17 crash at Dallas.

If he did see the B-17, the way to recover from this is to roll out and pass behind and underneath the bomber. Increasing the bank and pulling it the absolute worst thing to do, as it makes the geometry worse since you’re now keeping your turn circle inside the other plane’s.

Flying in the aluminum tubes this week

You probably did the Expressway Visual 31 into LGA. Yes, and big airplanes can fly this and often do visual patterns. Sometimes, those visuals look remarkably like ILSs, but we can also do the fun stuff sometimes. As far as stable approaches, each carrier is different based on things like...
