Forget student you can pick up anyone from anywhere and he can do whatever he wants in your plane as long as You are PIC, it’s your arse on the line. Obviously you can’t sign his log book and that flight hour won’t count legally.

it says VFR conditions, doesnt say you have to be on a VFR flight plan or cannot be on IFR flight plan. I think that should suffice. more experienced people will chime in shortly as well

Depends on where you live and your definition of cold. Someone mentioned above, dress like you will walk back home. Pay attention to this, if you have to do a off airport landing and you successfully do it, last thing you want is freeze to death. And whatever coat or whatever you are carrying...

I think the most chilling part was the pilots comment - will take off and figure out from there. I will admit I have taken off more than once with a mentality of let’s go up and figure out a direction of my flight. But those are joy rides from my previous home base with no destination in mind...

I used to maintain an excel file for everything above 50nm and whatever is required for commercial. After tracking it for some 200 hrs I stopped. As a matter of fact I haven’t update my paper log book in a while… I should probably do that.
