Talk me out of renewing my AOPA membership

Really? You believe the organization can run in perpetuity in pursuit of their goals, without accepting another dime in membership dues?

Talk me out of renewing my AOPA membership

It's an important organization. On the average AOPA does a great deal for GA, in response for a pretty low ask which includes a nice magazine subscription and a couple of perks. I would encourage anyone debating the "investment" to try to think big picture, rather than "what's in it for me."

    G 3 vs dual G275

Shades of grey. Somewhat subjective and completely case-by-case considerations. Of course, also you have to assume one's aircraft is on the G3X Touch AML, if you're talking about a certified installation. Sometimes the cost of panel surgery is the difference maker. Garmin is good at pricing...

Glidepath when going direct to FAF on an RNAV circling approach on the Garmin GPS175/GNC-355/GNX-375

RNP AR is not coming to piston GA aircraft anytime soon. They are left purely to the realm of highly automated flight decks with levels of redundancy we can't afford (in money or weight) for our little airplanes. At my last flight department, I maintained RNP AR currency for years and flew one...

Upgrade options for an IFR clock?

That's what I expected - and that is not suitable for the purposes of meeting the 91.205 clock requirement. Sorry to send you down the IFR clock wormhole.

Upgrade options for an IFR clock?

It is not incorrect. You're to be forgiven for your confusion on this, and you're in very good company, but if you follow the "IFR Clock rabbit hole" to its conclusion you will realize you've misunderstood the Nkugba interpretation, which doesn't contain the support for what you've inferred...

Upgrade options for an IFR clock?

This again? - IFR GPS (GNS430/530, GTN650/750, etc.) aren't suitable replacements for IFR clock. (G1000/similar "suite" may be suitable) - Transponder clock/timer is not suitable. - Your phone is not suitable. Long thread I participated in sometime in the last couple of years, and provided...

    IFR questions

You would need a second aircraft (IFR capable to include ground-based navigation for approaches) to complete the IRA practical test.

    Instrument Training

I can't recall a single successful applicant out of a couple hundred IRA practical tests which didn't feature 100% dual received for all of the simulated/actual instrument time as opposed to 15 or so hours.

    Cessna's recommendation on flaps

Been friendly-jousting on the message boards for a long time! Had I said that, someone would have brought up a scenario involving a Harrier Jump Jet or something of that ilk. I find it a little easier to keep things in context, avoid those unproductive tangents and keep the discussion on track. :)

    Cessna's recommendation on flaps

I stand by my statement, which I worded carefully and remains accurate.

    Cessna's recommendation on flaps

For the typical single-engine piston airplane, use of flaps may shorten the ground roll but will always decrease climb performance. The pilot must decide which is more valuable; a decreased ground roll or increased climb performance. The change in language over time in the POH/AFM for the...

    Required Aircraft Flight Manual Supplements

There's no specification as to whether required aircraft documents (including AFMS) be in print format vs. digital; they simply must be kept aboard the aircraft. My AFM and all of its supplements are electronic, meaning I can't operate my personal aircraft unless I bring my iPad or iPhone with...

    Tesla Model 3 - Finally.

My house was built in the 60s and is "interesting" from an electrical perspective. I have two subpanels in different interior rooms in the house, one main breaker on the outside of the house which was added when I did solar in 2019, and a main panel with four 50 amp breakers on it that feeds to...

    Tesla Model 3 - Finally.

Hey Larry, I know we talked about this off-line... I have 200A service and when I purchased the Model 3, I had no available 50A breakers. I had to get rid of my electric stove and replace it with natural gas to free up a 50A breaker. The electrician who installed my Tesla Wall Connector said...

    Tesla Model 3 - Finally.

I do 120V charging all the time, at work, through a basic outlet in the hangar. But since I nearly always leave for a few days at a time, the slow charging rate isn't a problem. As you point out, you can get quite a few miles of out of an overnight charging session. I do have the occasional...

    Tesla Model 3 - Finally.

How'd I miss this thread? I've enjoyed my Model 3 since September of last year. Overall, I've enjoyed the experience, but it's not without warts. I scanned the thread. Didn't read all of the comments but here are some takeaways I have after about a half-year of ownership and some interesting...

ATP add on rating - lost like last year's Easter eggs...

Correct, you need ATP-CTP course completion in order to be eligible for the ATP-AMEL knowledge test.

    Rough Ground Flight Review

Absolutely perfect. That's professionalism in action right there... the proper way to handle these matters. There's no need to "die on a hill" when it comes to matters like these; simply go to the reference materials and work through it together. Everyone wins.

    AV-30-C Question

I can't help but think this could be good tidings for legacy attitude-based autopilot owners (i.e. Altimatic/Century). I realize this particular product seems to work with digital autopilots only at present, but converter boxes wouldn't be that hard to build. Hopefully those of us who have been...
