    Learning interesting things while flying

Higher Learning is a great name for your channel. How do you intend to link the flying that you intend to do to the topics of your airborne Chautauquas? A subjective observation: no one needs to spend 20 minutes watching a person sit in a chair, even if that chair is in the sky.

    Fastest Twin Piston Under 400K?

The correct answer to your question was supplied by Kaiser in post #2: Aerostar. Yet here we are at post #79. Based on your desire to have the overwater safety of two engines, and your 200NM South Florida to Eleuthera segment, the time difference between an Aerostar and a slower twin such as a...

    favorite double edge razor blades?

The straight razor...I prefer to leave that instrument to professionals. All of the straight razor shaves I've had have been first-rate, but none have been noticeably better than what I get using my Muhle R41 with a Feather blade.

Couldn't agree with you more. Why waste precious time mining those treasure-troves of knowledge and expertise, compiled over decades and filled with observations and first-hand experiences offered free-of-charge by people who are not trying to sell you anything? Pure craziness.

If you're happy with your current shaving rig, that's great--stick with it. If you happen to try using a safety razor, please let us know which blades you prefer.

    favorite double edge razor blades?

I had the same smirk. The issue of cost always seems to come up when discussing safety razors. Maybe this arises from a general sense that we're being gouged by razor manufacturers, and the realization that all of the alleged technical advancement incorporated into razors on the market today...

How old is too old for a propeller?

Apparently, you're never too old for a propeller.

    favorite double edge razor blades?

When I began using a safety razor I read many comments regarding the sharpness of Feather blades. Some of the commenters were concerned about the reputed keenness of the Feathers and a few claimed that they cause more nicks and cuts. But that never made sense to me--any razor blade is sharp...

The issue of non-aviators buying airpark properties is one that I hadn’t considered. Thanks for bringing that into the discussion. RW

    Pilots into Audiophile Systems/Home Theater

Although not a home theater rig, I’ve enjoyed a stereo system that has, since 1996, featured Martin Logan Aerius speakers driven by Aragon amplification (8008 amp, 24k pre-amp, and their external phono stage). Sources include a 1970s Yamaha turntable with a carefully set-up tone arm and Grado...

    favorite double edge razor blades?

I like Feather blades in open and closed comb razors. I find little difference in the way that they feel but they do seem to have a keener edge than others I’ve tried. There are a few online retailers that specialize in men’s shaving gear, and I recall that some offer variety packs that allow...

No permission needed of course, but your forum etiquette is greatly appreciated and the points you raise are worth consideration.

Is rotation closer to Vx, than Vr necessarily a bad idea?

tobnpr, There are a lot of techniques that can be used to get an airplane to slip the surly bonds. At some point all the pieces fall into place and everything makes perfect sense (I’m still waiting for that moment to happen). You stated that it was your first pre-flight briefing, so the...

Baggage Handler Killed in Montgomery (Jet Engine)

Well put, and more fact than opinion I'd say. My first aviation job was working as a line boy at a small GA-only airport. That experience included a couple of instances in which I could easily have made a statistic of myself. One such near-miss was witnessed by the local IA. A classic...

Baggage Handler Killed in Montgomery (Jet Engine)

Here's an excerpt of my earlier post: The line of inquiry I attempted to initiate was intended to use the Piedmont accident as an example of the serious potential danger that a running aircraft engine--any running aircraft engine--poses to humans in the immediate vicinity, and point out that...

Baggage Handler Killed in Montgomery (Jet Engine)

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I was missing none of the points you included in your summary. The similarity between the Piedmont accident and the Yak giving rides is that both aircraft, with an engine running, are a potentially deadly threat to people nearby. In one scenario luck...

Baggage Handler Killed in Montgomery (Jet Engine)

But that’s the crux of the matter, isn’t it: people, on the ramp, in close proximity to a running aircraft engine. A single, momentary lapse of SA can, and sometimes does, result in a tragedy. It seemed to me that the OP who started the other thread was genuinely concerned about the possibility...

Baggage Handler Killed in Montgomery (Jet Engine)

There was a recent thread, now locked, titled Got “thrown out” of an airport today. I wonder whether anyone else sees a connection between this tragic and entirely preventable accident and the concerns that the OP of that thread expressed.

    Life-Changing Bands (or Songs)

At parties and get-togethers, I notice a lot of people checking out the titles of books and recordings on the bookshelves and I sometimes find myself doing likewise. I'd never look in someone's medicine cabinet, but a glimpse at what they read and listen to seems, to me, to give a much more...

    Life-Changing Bands (or Songs)

What a great thread, and as usual I’m late to the party. Thanks to SoonerAviator for the thread and to everyone who posted. Reading through the posts provides some interesting insights, and a few surprises. In his poem Ulanova At Forty-Six At Last Dances Before A Camera Giselle, Frank Bidart...
