Newly minted PPL purchased Piper Arrow II - tips on flying or maintenance?

I fly an arrow in a club setting. Several mentors of mine ( including several CFI's) have advised to make the gear down checks on downwind, base and final. TOUCH the gear lever, glance down at your hand when you do, and MAKE sure you SEE 3 green lights. Also, when the gear is down, there's a...

    IFR written question

I stumbled across 60-11c which discusses "test aids" and materials. It specifically says: "Applicants may use test aids, such as scales, straightedges, protractors, plotters, navigation computers, log sheets, and all models of aviation oriented calculating devices that are directly related to...

    N-Numbers. Superstitious? Respectful?

Ha! This confirms what my roommate in college had said to me on the very first day, when we were standing by the door. Our dorm room number was 4404. He didn’t like it at all (he was from traditional Hong Kong family)

Finally got a chance to fly my new (to me) plane

For those who are still wondering if a Long distance flight is possible in a glider, may I present this screen shot of a flight in a high-performance glider that was just completed about 1/2 hour ago by one of our club members in his friend's glider plane:

Finally got a chance to fly my new (to me) plane

Yes, the brown orb is the original bakelite release handle. It's attached to a springloaded clip that releases the tow ring from the glider in flight. Thanks to your wonderful description, from now on I will only refer to it as the brown orb.

Finally got a chance to fly my new (to me) plane

Yes, It's a good idea to stay within gliding distance of the airport, and that does vary with both altitude and wind. You get bonus time for any lifting air masses you can find along the way. Generally, glider pilots will be conservative and calculate their "final glide" back to the airport as...

Finally got a chance to fly my new (to me) plane

Our soaring club has decided to do limited launches with private gliders. So, I was able to do my first flight today (after a ground check). For a 1975 vintage plane, the SGS 1-35 is a great performer (36/1 glide ratio). At about 400+ pounds, it climbed like a homesick angel in thermals and...

    Things to do...

If you have VR setup, I would suggest you look into condor soaring. You can not only get better at stick/rudder with this program, but you can also race people around the world. There are a number of sponsored race pilots who hone their skills in the off-season. Now, everywhere is the...

    Cirrus down near Aspen

Fun article to read (HT to the MRA....I used to live there and that group is fantastic). What's interesting is that I had the instruments on a SR20 that I fly (2003 G2) got "haywire" with the engine sounding exactly the same, backup instruments working well and no change in...

    My last flight

I feel as if every time I read posts like this, that a nice winter read for folks in your situation might come in handy. As was alluded to in an earlier reply, static "short field" runup just before takeoff is a quick way to check if you are making full power. Another option on takeoff is to...

Lost radios today...looking for reliable handheld

com1 definitely did not work; the entire audio panel was dead. This made com1 dead too. The avionics boffins that we know are on it. I think a call was placed to cirrus as well. I will do my best to report back when i know more.

Lost radios today...looking for reliable handheld

Our maintenance guy was able to reproduce the failure once. Then, it worked thereafter. All we did was turn on the plane to get going (G2 Cirrus SR20 with avidyne and 430W's x 2). No popped breakers. The MFD, Transponder, 430 #2, and radio panel all went dead after takeoff...and stayed...
