I'm very happy with foreflight making automatic drafts that I approve into their integrated logbook. I occasionally export to a spreadsheet as a backup. Like @schmookeeg I suffered the illusion that I would eventually backfill paper logs, but I ended up just making a master entry for everything...

Consider a Maule. You can get a 180HP variety at a discount because a lot of people buy them, realize they want a bigger engine, and then sell them. And, for your purposes, you don't need the bigger engine. And it's big enough for people bigger than fun-sized.
