    Flamping... Sort of

Anyone who has ever designed anything will understand that the process can be slowed down A LOT if the test step requires eight hours of sleeping on the prototype.

PIREP: On verizon the service got usefully better in the past year. Used to be I would have to walk to the Beaver side of the island to get any signal. Last summer I was getting two bars, enough to actually make a phone useful, from the fire ring. For the bugs, yeah, they are sometimes so bad...

    Flamping... Sort of

I have been, very slowly, building up the skills necessary to make a custom air mattress to fit into my Maule. Someday you will see a video of it. So far it's been a year since I started...

    Northern lights and flying

Satellites are vulnerable because they are not shielded by the atmosphere. The grid is vulnerable because electrical wires sort of act as antennas, gathering energy along their entire path and focusing it on wherever they terminate. Your plane will be fine. But in a worst case, GPS might be...

Empty cargo planes roam the skies

I guess the thing I learned in this thread is that this is yet another example of there being no single answer for everyone. It's like internet at my old place in Mexico. The options were Telmex, Mega Cable, TotalPlay and Starlink, and the best one varied neighborhood by neighborhood, sometimes...

Empty cargo planes roam the skies

Fedex seems to be monitoring this thread. About 25 minutes after my complaint above they showed up with the package they were unable to deliver properly yesterday.

Empty cargo planes roam the skies

I'm gonna defend them. In my area USPS is a little better than UPS and both are dramatically better than fedex. Fedex consistently fails to find our house (e.g. yesterday) or delivers to the wrong house (e.g. two weeks ago). USPS is wired into some sort of notifications system so my Alexa pings...

    Simple camping meal

Coco is the dog that looks like a cow. Chamoy is the brindle coated one. Chamoy doesn't mind his RexSpecs at all. He's wired pretty tight and isn't adapting to the plane too quickly, but the RexSpecs aren't part of the problem. Just the movement throws him off and he seems to get a little...

WTF, over? (Video of a bad landing and go around)

I wonder if he was flying by perceived speed, instead of using the airspeed indicator.

    6Y9 2024 Fly in/camp out

Yeah, I was thinking overnight temps. Cause that's when you'll be in the tent. But, yeah, it was warm last year.

    6Y9 2024 Fly in/camp out

For this event, there is sometimes frost overnight. Typically temps are 40s to 60s. Summertime heat is not likely to be the problem.

Starlink - Does it work in airplanes?

Can't use it in your plane, unless you have a very slow plane. But I live out of a tent about a month a year and that's only possible because starlink allows me to telecommute from anywhere. It's been game changing for me.
