    Cessna 150 Rotax Conversion

The opposite is more often true. Making the same power with less displacement requires higher RPM. Friction losses associated with higher RPM tend to reduce efficiency. The highest efficiency reciprocating engines (huge marine engines) run at very low RPM specifically because it enhances...

Just commented on MOSAIC, have you?

I wrote a comment to lay out the safety benefit of using Vs0 versus Vs1, and also in support of removing the restriction on applicability of approved modifications e.g. variable pitch props and lift enhancing devices.

Proposed Rule - Agent for Service

Agreed, but I presume the need for a physical versus mailing address would be associated with obtaining proof of delivery to an agent. Whether the person themselves is ever there or has never been there is not the issue.

Proposed Rule - Agent for Service

It’s an aside from this thread but many countries of the world have required registered addresses for every individual and national ID cards that must be kept current, for many years. This has deep ramifications in terms of controlling your ability to move freely as you say and is something to...

Warning: Insurance renewal and medical type

Being able to pass an ill conceived medical exam is not what matters in relation to insurance claims, having accidents is what matters. The record reported to Congress in that regard indicates that BasicMed is equivalent to a third class medical. At least the entirely pointless ECG protocol...

Get the Lead out -- time to stop dragging our feet

As per my post above, I would drain the carbs if it sits for more than a month. Easy enough to do with only a clip retaining the Bing float bowl. After your let's say tenth time spending the better part of a day cleaning pilot jets and reassembling something more complicated than a set of...

    Vulcanair P68TC (Partenavia P68)

The fact that both wings broke at exactly the same load would tend to indicate that its a well designed structure, with quality manufacture. Grumman tried to design that feature (break away wingtips) into the F8F and had issues with one breaking off first.

Get the Lead out -- time to stop dragging our feet

In my extensive experience with cleaning motorcycle carbs due to modern auto fuel (I own 9 operable motorcycles) I've found that it takes between 1 and 2 months before you are likely to have problems with clogged pilot jets. Something to bear in mind with those Rotax engines having Bing...

    I’m calling the peak

Houses and hangars are inexpensive if you want to live where they are inexpensive. Nowadays communication and travel has allowed more people to see where they’d prefer to live and as a result of competition to live where everybody else wants to live, and higher total population, prices and...

Get the Lead out -- time to stop dragging our feet

I’m sure Samuel Pierpont Langley is working on this problem as we speak.

    Take Action! MOSAIC comment period.

I think that regardless of the number selected by FAA, the rational limit is Vs0 because clean stall speed has no impact on pilot skill and judgment to fly but low landing speed arguably does have an impact. Incidentally 54 kts Vs0 would (in my view properly) include more aircraft.

MOSAIC rule to be published on 7/24

Don’t forget field approvals - for example I have a field approved CS speed prop on my certified aircraft, perfectly legal but not on the TCDS. My comment would be to suggest a change to “approved installation under regulations applicable to the aircraft type” This NPRM certainly is a good and...

MOSAIC rule to be published on 7/24

I don’t think new factory built LSA planes will sell a lot faster regardless of whether they can have four seats installed, two of them useable by Sport Pilots, or be built much heavier with much more power and performance. They will be be better, more useful, safer planes than current LSAs but...

I like the Sukhoi 29 too, but I think this is the best…. If it needs to be ‘sexy’ that means it needs to be exotic and a little dangerous. http://www.airbum.com/pireps/PirepMullicoupe.html

MOSAIC rule to be published on 7/24

I was thinking the market price for RV-9s may rise. Seems to me RV-7s etc may be right on the edge but Vans doesn't publish the no-flap stall speed.

MOSAIC rule to be published on 7/24

Vans doesn't seem to publish clean stall speeds... I can see that changing. Naturally and regardless my own plane stalls at 54 kts with flaps extended, not clean :)

BasicMed changes in 2024 FAA Reauthorization Act

That’s the FAA position, yes, and it’s a sensible one that I think was carefully developed by FAA to avoid the draconian medical system for non-scheduled commercial and private pilots that’s implemented in most countries under ICAO standards, while at the same time allowing FAA to claim they are...

BasicMed changes in 2024 FAA Reauthorization Act

Although FAA maintains the 3rd Class is an internationally compliant medical, ICAO and most countries do not agree and first or second class is all there is, generally with more requirements than either of those classes in the US. However If ICAO were to recognize BasicMed that might be an...
