    Liability Only Insurance

I have 12 personal vehicles including a plane, not one of them covered by hull insurance. I was a bit confused by the AOPA announcement, I haven't purchased aircraft in-flight hull coverage for a long time and had no idea buying only the coverage you want may be an issue with some companies...

Pipistrel Panthera - The perfect airplane?

Bingo :) The Panthera was pitched as an electric aircraft in its ultimate intended configuration. A friend worked in a relevant position for the Slovenian government, and in its interaction with the EU. It’s a very small country and the players in government/research/money know each other...

Pipistrel Panthera - The perfect airplane?

I’d be interested in knowing the specifics of when the use of "aircraft groups" was revised out of the E/E process a number of years ago. My experience was maybe 5 years ago and yes, it was discussed with a DAR. In the end I decided to stick with my current Bölkow 209, which is as you...

Pipistrel Panthera - The perfect airplane?

My understanding based on reading FAA documentation is that E/E is organized into groups, and the group a particular aircraft falls into is supposed to define the operating limitations. Aerobatic, glider, ex-military piston are the ‘easy’ groups, anything that would compete with widely...

Pipistrel Panthera - The perfect airplane?

Experimental Exhibition is not necessarily limiting because in some cases (as previously mentioned, warbird, glider, aerobatic etc aircraft) the proficiency area (to "maintain currency") is the entire continental US, and the crew allowance can be liberal. The limitations applied are specific...

Pipistrel Panthera - The perfect airplane?

What I find interesting is not whether you got it wrong, it’s my sneaking suspicion you’re right and that Pipistrel and now Textron is delivering uncertified aircraft to the public in serial production, with the help of some friendly DAR & FSDO, while the lame 2024-style FAA bureaucracy doesn’t...

    Aviators who are not pilots

45 years ago when I got my student pilot certificate solo flights were almost unrestricted. You could do almost anything as long as you didn’t carry passengers, with very little instructor involvement once you were signed off for solo. Yes, the rules were different and it wasn’t unusual for...

Pipistrel Panthera - The perfect airplane?

That is the standard situation for several sub-categories of Experimental Exhibition, covering special interest aircraft in particular FAA-defined categories with the intent of allowing them to be displayed to the public, not as a way to bypass certification of factory built, privately operated...

Pipistrel Panthera - The perfect airplane?

If the aircraft type is not certified in a ICAO-signatory country of registration, it cannot be legally flown in the US without a specific FAA permit that specifies a lot of details. Canadian homebuilts are an exception, covered by a separate US-Canadian treaty. I believe non-FAA registered...

Pipistrel Panthera - The perfect airplane?

There are no simple ways to get an an FAA type certificate for a factory built aircraft type that doesn't have one. There are likely ways to get an individual aircraft of that type N-registered as an Experimental, with operating limitations that vary but which can sometimes be pretty much wide...

Pipistrel Panthera - The perfect airplane?

Pipistel’s factory is in Slovenia, I visited once, with a smaller facility just across the border in Italy. TA is Europe is indeed low and inconsistent, due to the unavailability of in-flight altimeter data in many areas. The Panthera is not certified anywhere, including in the US and there...

Gauging risk on an old engine

I fly an O-320 that was assembled in 1971 and has never been apart. It has 1150 hrs total time with a known history that includes some significant periods of storage. I’ve been flying it 300 hrs and oil consumption has risen from 1 qt every 12 hrs to the same every 8-9 hrs. Aircraft...

Pipistrel Panthera - The perfect airplane?

The Pantera isn’t certified in any country. By my observation, putting a non-US certified factory built aircraft on N-register requires that it fit into a specific authorized Experimental category, i.e. warbird, aerobatic, competition glider or one of a kind for exhibition to the public...

Pipistrel Panthera - The perfect airplane?

Interesting. What are your FAA operating limitations? Is it in Experimental Exhibition or a different Experimental category? It’s amazing to me that FAA is apparently allowing multiple examples of a Textron built four seat IFR touring aircraft to be sold to end users without certification.

Pipistrel Panthera - The perfect airplane?

Been there done that and it has little. It’s a bit ridiculous if you like to see where you’re going, but like the Ryan NYP it’s part of the compromise to reach the performance goal. The plane as originally envisioned was a way to get high performance with a small engine that could burn auto...

New to Foreflight & ipad (and US!) - gps receiver.

Me too, and what I’ve been doing for a couple of years is running two non-current iPad Mini 5s, each absolutely identical to the other including loaded apps and screen layouts. These cost $600 for both combined, with GPS and max storage, and can as of now load the latest and greatest from...

New to Foreflight & ipad (and US!) - gps receiver.

In addition to ADS-B, receivers like the Stratus also include a WAAS GPS receiver that provides a better GPS signal relative to the tablet's internal GPS. This also makes having an internal GPS unnecessary, except as a backup, making the OPs iPad Mini functional for use with Foreflight.

New to Foreflight & ipad (and US!) - gps receiver.

If all you want is an external GPS, something like the Garmin Glo 2 for about $100 will work. I'd buy a used Stratus 2S for $400 or so instead and have ADS-B IN as well as GPS. Once you have ADS-B data on Foreflight you wonder how you flew previously while being so unaware of the traffic...
