Oh boy! Did I open a can of worms?? Keep up the comments guys/gals, it's incredibly entertaining!

Which is harder to land? Tailwheel or Glider

That's my thoughts as well. It's all or nothing and you have to keep flying it even when it's on the ground to prevent ground loops.

Which is harder to land? Tailwheel or Glider

I have been training for 11 days now in the glider and have never had tailwheel experience. It is quite difficult to land and bring a glider to a stop as it only has 1 wheel in the CG and a forward wheel in the front (which keeps the nose from scraping the ground). While nose overs are...

    1st Solo ever!!

I think I got the landings down now. I can now make precision landings at will. Today I had a strong headwind and there was another layer of wind above that which was going some crazy way. I was too close downwind, had to make a turn out wide before going on base, went to base way too late...

    1st Solo ever!!

Here is the 2nd solo.. I am aiming the gopro way too high. I'll get another one tomorrow that's more focused on the instruments.

    1st Solo ever!!

The best one in the country... ;) Arizona Soaring in Maricopa, AZ. They have incredible instructors and pilots and every summer they teach the USAF academy cadets for aerobatic competitions.

    1st Solo ever!!

Man, it's very interesting with these gliders. So much thought has to go into it -- even on takeoff. I simply could not keep the correct position behind the tow plane while climbing during early training. Also the plane just kept oscillating in yaw because I wasn't giving the pedals enough...

    1st Solo ever!!

All: I'm so happy that I finally (after years and years of dreaming to "do it one day") got my solo flight in a glider at my school in Arizona. I was a little nervous because I didn't want to screw up and then get into a panic situation where several things could go wrong. All the way from...

    For military pilots

Just the fact that the flying doesn't translate one-to-one with civilian. Could someone explain the restricted ATP? And the article that @rhkennerly mentioned indicates that there is some complicated "slop" going on with the conversion.

    For military pilots

This seems odd to me that the airlines don't value military experience like I had thought. Military experience seems easily more advanced than a prop plane for private and instruments. It should actually weigh more than private.

    For military pilots

For all my military compadres, I wanted to know how the training equates to the civilian world. It seems like pilot training in the USAF, Army, etc.. are way more involved compared to civilian flight training. Is this true? Will you have more skills with the military planes than the civilian...

Why do they say "Anyone can learn how to fly"?

All: From all the reading I've been doing this past year and all of my flight experiences throughout my life, I find this statement a bit misleading. It's one thing to keep the airplane straight with no rudder input or rolling/pitching input. However, it's a totally different ballgame when...

    Talking on the radio improvements

English is my first language. It's not the attention deficit in the sense that my mind is distracted by other things. It's that I'm so nervous that I don't actually focus on what was said so I can't repeat it. Many people in this thread admitted that they go through or went through that...

Glider Pilot vs. Private Pilot Skills

Well, to be fair, there are a lot of things about the glider that don't overlap the airplane as well. In any case, as other's have mentioned, I'm mainly talking about the stick-n-rudder skills. Most here agree that flying a glider does require more "flying skills" than an airplane.

Glider Pilot vs. Private Pilot Skills

Ouch. So an airplane's definition must satisfy having a motor? So what would we call self-launched gliders?

I need help with getting over a sensation

Absolutely concur with your fear. I'm the same way. I hate the falling sensation when they pull 0gs or less. Is this something you have to physically overcome with doing breathing exercises? I don't think it has to do with falling but more of the feeling that your stomach is going up instead...

    Talking on the radio improvements

Yea that's a lot to digest. It's definitely what got me hung up before when I was training with the powered airplane. I simply must get over this hump. Thanks for your advice!

Glider Pilot vs. Private Pilot Skills

When I mention it reminds me of a fighter, I was speaking in terms of shape and the stick-n-rudder controls. Not about the flight characteristics. Sorry if I misled by my statement. I never professed to be an expert. I'm just going off of my experience (limited) with both airplanes. Thanks!
