Airventure 2018 attendance numbers are in!!

Suffice it to say that Oshkosh is a bright, shining spot in general aviation. Pretty much every GA pilot plans to attend OSH at least once or twice, and many (like me) save their nickels all year long so as to be able to attend annually. That said, OSH is not a good indication of GA health...

    Our Trip to Oshkosh

Hey -- the HOPS Party made it in at about the 36 minute mark! :) Cool video -- thanks for sharing it!

I always find it interesting that people hold restaurants and retail stores to very high standards of customer service, but willingly suffer with the most amazingly bad service from chain motels. If a motel employee tells you, their valued guest, to reserve with someone else, DON'T STAY THERE...

Well, we would never use Priceline to sell our rooms -- but if we did, of course we would match the price. In fact, we would beat it, because we would be saving money by booking you over the phone. Sent from my SM-T713 using Tapatalk

    RV panels are terrible

My RV-8A's panel was, indeed, a mish-mash of Cessna and Piper instruments when I bought it, in 2013. In 2014, I re-did the whole thing, using Stein Air's fantastic panel-planner service. It is EXACTLY what I want, and -- 4 years later -- it's still better than most panels I see. Here's a...

If one of my employees told a customer to book on-line, instead of helping them, that employee would be immediately escorted off the property. Sent from my SM-T713 using Tapatalk

What is the general state of GA?

The perennial "Is GA dying?" thread. Depressing but necessary, I suppose. Here are three data points: 1. We flew to OSH this year (36 years in a row, baby!) and stopped at half a dozen Midwest airports. The condition of these small-town airports was sad -- even though this was arguably the...

Sounds like the organizer of the event did a craptastic job of negotiating a group room rate. I imagine the guys who paid $150/night were less than thrilled that you found a room for $100! ;) Sent from my SM-T713 using Tapatalk

Youre gonna need to 'splain that a bit more. You're telling us that a hotel front desk clerk wanted you to book on-line when you walked in off the street, credit card in-hand?? That's, um, crazy. Did you actually stay at that hotel? I wouldn't have let the door hit me on the butt on the...

Hotwire IS actually a real discount on-line booking service, and you can save money using them. Same with PriceLine. The only flaw in that system is that only unsuccessful hotels use it (they dump rooms they know they can't sell there) and we usually don't want to stay at that sort of place...

We see people do that all the time! When they walk in and tell us they have a reservation (that we haven't yet received -- it comes via email) they are always stunned to find out that they just paid at least 15% more than they would have had they just walked in. lol Sent from my SM-T713...

    Oshkosh - 2018

The Oshkosh North 40, as photographed yesterday by my friend Ryan Wubben. It looks so forlorn and empty. You can still see the outline of the airplanes and tents. I can see our campsite in Row 509. Guess I can cut off my wristband now... *sigh* Sent from my SM-T713 using Tapatalk

I will let y'all in on a hotel booking secret, if y'all promise not to tell anyone. Here it is: Don't book on-line. In the olden days (like, 10 years ago) you could save money by booking on line. The on-line booking companies were all eager, hungry, and helpful. We all loved them. Then...

    Best tablet for Garmin Pilot

I have used Garmin Pilot for Android since its introduction in 2012. I'm currently running it flawlessly on two Samsung S2s and a new Samsung S3. We use it on every flight. Pilot for Android hasn't been buggy since ~2014ish. If it's not running properly on your device, it may be an issue...

    Oshkosh - 2018

I've been saying this since the 1990s, to no avail. Conversely, I'm actually impressed that the FAA still allows NORDO into OSH, in today's crazy litigious world. Sent from my SM-T713 using Tapatalk

    Oshkosh - 2019

Our little group (affectionately known as "Trailer Trash", as we all keep our camping stuff in a trailer that a farmer friend stores for us near OSH) is already making changes, additions, and suggestions for next year. The biggest change will be a more organized coffee center, with more mugs...

    Oshkosh - 2018

Please tell me they were met by security and quick-stepped into a squad car. That's not just stupid or ignorant. That's reckless, and could have killed people.
