Lance air down short of 36 OSH

Get there early and it is no busier than a normal field. I flew in Friday and the tower frequency was so quiet after FISK that I asked for radio check.

Since when have transponders been on for the VFR Fisk Arrival

Years ago (2014 and earlier ) the NOTAM told pilots to turn their transponders to standby or off. Sometime since 2014 this seems to have changed. In the 2024 NOTAM there is no mention of this. It's as if whatever voodoo was overloading the local equipment is no longer a thing? Does anyone...

Departing VFR after telephoning for an IFR clearance

My purpose in asking was an attempt to minimize the time spent on the phone in the airplane short of the runway instead of being on the CTAF. The obvious answer in VFR conditions is to just depart 1200 and pick it up in the air. Sadly, I've gotten a few oddball routes and nav assignments doing...

Departing VFR after telephoning for an IFR clearance

What is ATC's position on obtaining an IFR clearance via telephone, telling them you are not ready to go yet, but then departing VFR without phoning them back a second time to get a release time and instead just radioing once airborne? I'm wondering if this is taboo, but if not would you want...

    Dan Gryder Lockheed Electra Crash

I'm pretty sure you could weld that tail wheel at a 45 degree turn to the left and the main brakes could override any tendency to turn - if they were working.

Help me diagnose why the co-pilot passenger headset jack sounds so faint when engine is running

    Bahamas Trip in July

I can second the recommendation for Treasure Cay. One of the best beaches you will ever see, and not many people. With an airplane you can get to out of the way places like MYAT that the big cruise ships and airlines don't service.

Help me diagnose why the co-pilot passenger headset jack sounds so faint when engine is running

4 place intercom, garmin GMA345 audio panel. Of the 4 sets of jacks, all work as expected except the copilot jacks. The microphone jack always works, but the headset jack(listen) produces very little volume at all once the engine is running. Adjusting the volume control on the 345 works as...

Anomalous Ammeter Readings + Loss of Alternator

    1) The spike in amps once the engine is running is to be expected as your battery charges back up quickly. After a few minutes it should drop down to what you are used to seeing in flight 2) Check the field wire on the alternator. My Arrow IV had a loose one and amps would go to zero as the...

VFR to IFR upgrade (before delivery of new aircraft)

Matt: The jump from VFR to IFR requires at least a NAV radio such as the one the guy suggested. I'd also suggest an IFR certified GPS if you are serious. Dynon sells neither. Expect install labor to be 50% of the hardware cost on almost any avionics work.

Pre Buy Inspection - Who generally pays for moving the plane?

You can hire experienced inspectors to travel and do a pre-buy. I used Owen from https://barefootaviation.com/

    Piper automatic gear extend

I worked with my mechanic today on my Arrow IV's "gear indicator lights circuit breaker trippin". It turns out a recent avionics install had left a live wire dangling down in the engine compartment. When the nose gear came up it was mashing the wire causing the tripped breaker. ALSO: in this...
