How do acrobatic Planes do loops, etc.?

I cry foul! LOL :D I’m a little biased toward piston driven GA acro planes. ;)

How do acrobatic Planes do loops, etc.?

LOL, not angry. What's the aircraft type and specific maneuver situation you're referring to?

How do acrobatic Planes do loops, etc.?

Airplanes are totally self correcting and behave just like the arrow pointed uphill unless the silly pilot gets in the way and tries to keep the nose up by continually adding more and more pitch input. I've flown a bunch of acro in a bunch of different airplanes and never flown one that needed a...

How do acrobatic Planes do loops, etc.?

I'm still confused how an airplane can be on track to stall (thus requiring stall avoidance) if the stick is never close to full aft. ;) Just because you're pointed uphill and slowing down doesn't mean you're about to stall...you're just an arrow following a parabolic arc.

How do acrobatic Planes do loops, etc.?

Not following how pulling the stick full aft preserves "controllability". Are we still talking about loops? If you're getting too slow and nose high before reaching the top of a loop, if you just hold the stick neutral, the airplane will just fall through a parabolic arc back down. Don't know...

How do acrobatic Planes do loops, etc.?

Not quite...never in the course of any kind flying do you AVOID a stall by pulling the stick full aft. ;) You should definitely not be using much aft stick on top of a loop. The objective is to float over the top in a fairly zero G state, or whatever it takes to keep fuel flowing to your carb if...

Modified maneuvers if no inverted systems?

You've gotta do it Ernie. Everyone would be thrilled to see your Tapering Waco at a contest.

Modified maneuvers if no inverted systems?

Yeah with a wood/composite prop, you can go deadstick if your airspeed is low enough for long enough. Depends on the maneuver. With a Half Cuban, you choose how long you want the negative G exposure to be, and you're also accelerating through the roll, which would likely avoid a dead stick...

Modified maneuvers if no inverted systems?

Ernie, I'd skipped the article but just read through the section you're referring to. I disagree with the blanket premise that non-inverted system aircraft must modify a figure such as a Half Cuban in order to fly it safely. It's just not the case. Quite a few pilots do very well in Sportsman...

Did you fly Primary or Sportsman? Glad you had a good experience and we're always glad to rope in more suckers!

Spin Recovery Training... and my first (not-so) aerobatic lesson

I don't think you're attempting to get deep into technique here, but at the risk of coming across as the uptight detail freak, I just have a longstanding objection to describing snaps as horizontal spins. IMO it's a hindrance to teaching the subtlety of good snap technique, which is much more...

Spin Recovery Training... and my first (not-so) aerobatic lesson

Sounded like he was talking about a crossover, which is a demonstration of what can happen if you use way too much forward stick during the recovery of a normal upright spin. The airplane can quickly transition into an inverted spin. Mandatory training for any acro pilot. Quite a few acro pilots...

difference between 1/2 cuban 8 and immelmann

Ernie, like any other maneuver, there are multiple ways of doing an Immelmann. It can be a totally positive G figure for lazy fun acro, but done in competition, you may go slightly and very momentarily negative, since you're waiting to roll until you've hit the apex of a round half loop, at...

Did anyone feel 0 fear their first aerobatic flight?

Just be aware that we acro heads get addicted to the sport not because we think being upside down or watching the horizon spin is fun or adrenaline inducing, but because of the never-ending challenge and satisfaction of learning new skills and finer degrees of control over the airplane. When you...

Taildragger to Biplane - thoughts about transition from nosewheel

I'd recommend flying the Cub and forgetting the Citabria. I've flown an Acro Sport and they have more in common with a Cub when it comes to landing and ground handling. The Citabria is just too forgiving and has too much forward visibility. Regarding power to weight ratio, a Citabria with two up...

A bit of a dream / itchy that feels out of reach

I think a couple folks here got the impression that the two older gentlemen in your anecdote were in involved with the Pitts you saw in the hangar. I assume they were not, and were just a couple crotchety buzzards who had no idea what they were talking about. I'm the President of the IAC Chapter...

Aerodynamics of the Base to Final stall

Slipping turn all the way around and down to the runway. Can see the aileron deflection. No flaps, no forward visibility, no problem getting down quick. I do this every landing, just not necessarily quite this steep. Also makes it easy to get down ahead of and out of the way of "normal"...

    How slow can you roll?

Hmm that would be a real trick for this kind of roll since unlike the positive G Hoover roll, this roll would require you to rotate the coffee cup AND the coffee pot 360 degrees as you roll. :) Not enough hands...

Not exactly an aerobatics question. . .

SAC cards are only valid when there is also waivered airspace in effect specifically for an airshow, waiving the legal minimum aerobatic altitude of 1,500' AGL, among other things. The SAC card itself does not waive any FARs, and doesn't mean you can fly when/where you want at whatever altitude...
