    Origin of “Skylane”

That's an interesting take. We got a brand-new AgCarryall in 1973 but never used it for aerial application. My first taildragger experience.

Looking for help with low compression.

Yesterday my 182's 0470 with 500 hours on it since major had jug #5 at 44/80. The engine was cold & my airplane hadn't moved in two months so we decided to test fly it today & take a warm engine reading. BTW, we were performing the annual. I took it up today & the air was horrible. Only 10...

    Cessna 150K- What to expect

I flew one for the first time without a checkout. Shocking I know. As a teen in the 70's I worked as a loader boy for a crop dusting outfit in Montana. I got my private license in their brand new 172. I learned to fly from the ag pilots. They were CFI's by the way. After I got my private...

    High DA takeoffs

I always lean on takeoff in a high density altitude situation. I also fly a an old 182 with a carburetor. In the 70's when I learned to fly in Montana off of a 4,700' airport we always leaned the mixture when the temps got high. The difference in engine performance was very noticeable...

    PA32-300. Am I a Cherokee or a Saratoga?

When asked type of aircraft I say Cessna 182. After that they usually refer to me as a Skylane which is incorrect. Mike is a 1957 A model. The Skylane version of the 182 wasn't but until 1958. I know picky picky. Skylane is fine but... In the case of the OP I too think PA32 is fine.

Have You Experienced An Engine Failure?

I had a total engine failure in a Piper Tomahawk that was owned by the student I was instructing at the time. This was in the early 90's. He had purchased the Tomahawk from Bolivar Aviation a large flight school that went out of business. It had over 10,000tt & was pretty rough. I owned the...

I resent being told what to do...I'm not disregarding or wearing a stupid mask. So there.

F******* another Utah plane down. Four on board

You're right. Four adults in a 172 on a hot, summer day in the mountains. Recipe for a disaster. When will they learn?

How many hours do you put on a plane.

That's a lot of hours per year in a sailplane. Our Blanik flew a lot it seems when we were operating our soaring school but seldom had to do 100 hour inspections in a season.

How many hours do you put on a plane.

I'm only averaging 50 hours per year in my 182. I log a many more hours in students aircraft which helps me stay reasonably current. Some may question if 50 hours/year justifies ownership. It does to me. I paid cash for it 4 years ago so ownership costs aren't a big deal. When I need to...

    Towplane crash at C83

This is terrible news. As at tow pilot & CFII I fully understand the dangers of towing. If you get complacent bad things can happen. In this case though, the tow pilot had next to zero odds. Sad. RIP

Did I gain too much weight to fly?

I too came to the point where I felt my weight was going to present future issues in my flying both in my sheer physical size & my health. I was 5' 11" & 248 pounds. I've been able to get my second class medical without issues but I am on BP meds & my blood sugar level can get a bit high. Not...

    Today I didn't fly

I flew Monday. I flew 50NM west to visit a buddy at his hangar & to see how his J3 project was going. After requesting flight following I wondered if my radio was inop because the frequency that is usually very busy was fairly quiet. ATC was only talking to me & one other aircraft doing...

cost of rentals /training...then vs now

I started my flight training in 1972. I was a teenager then. I paid $15.00 an hour for a Cherokee 150 & $7.00 got the instructor. Yes, Virginia, there was a Cherokee 150. It was the "C" model with a 150hp Lyc. In 1975 I became an instructor & was paid a $250.00 a month base & $4.00 an hour...

    Buying a new iPad

I need a new iPad. It would primarily be for Foreflight & to pair it with a Sentry for ADSB in. I'd also use it occasionally for travel when a laptop wasn't needed. The "new" iPad as Apple calls it on their website is available in 128gb which according to FF is adequate. They highly...

High Wing Or Low Wing poll

I actually prefer a low-wing from a pilots perspective. It's mostly about visibility & seeing other traffic. I own a 182 because it suits my mission. Before I bought the 182 I almost purchased an S-35 Bonanza. They're all good. Kinda like girls, even the ugly one have their virtues.
