post the aviation thing you learned today

Today was the first time I used my Foreflight checklist tab prior to takeoff in my 182.. I had my iPad on my lap & found checking off each item as I completed it very satisfying. I was flying to an EAA pancake breakfast & had our chapter president as my passenger so I thought since I'm a...

    Flying friends for life

Thanks. I'm actually getting quite busy. I'll send two for PPL check rides in a few weeks & have a bunch of new starts. My wife teases me about being busier in my semi retirement job than I was when I worked full time.

    Flying friends for life

I got to fly with an old friend in his wonderful RV 9A while we did his Flight Review. We've know each other for over 50 years & flew together when we were teenagers. I'm glad he flew 150 miles to come see me for his Flight Review. Here are pictures of now & when we flew my fathers new Piper...

Logbook - old dog - old tricks

I recently filled my fourth logbook. It was a Standard Master Pilot logbook. Not sure how many pages total but way over 200 with 18 lines per page. I'm not bragging about the hours because there's a slug of people that have much more time than me. This is my 49th year flying & it's all been GA...

    weight and balance

I recently flew with a pilot in his 175 with a Franklin engine/constant speed prop. It was so nose heavy that you ran out of elevator when you rounded out to land. We did a W & B & added two cases of water in the baggage compartment that weighed 104#. It made a huge difference in the handling...

    Looking for Training in Grumman

I instruct in a Traveler (AA5) up here in Washington state. Take a cheap flight to Seattle & we're 200 miles east. Side note. I'm actually enjoying teaching in the airplane & the renters/student reviews have been very positive.

    Stratus - CO reading

I'm a fairly new owner of a Stratus. I've flown my 182 quite a few times this week & have noticed I'm getting a CO alert only on climb out. It very consistently reads 75 ppm then in a few minutes goes green & never comes on again during the flight. I flew five flights on Saturday for Young...

    BFR

I've had two pilots ask me for a backdated Flight Review. One had done some damage to his 182 while landing on a gravel road on his farm. Both were told the same "no way Jose'". Don't ask me to jeopardize my certificates due to your oversight.

    Insuring older pilots

No but maybe we should get the two of them together. Cardinals are favorites to the elderly due to easy entry/exit. I guess a few younger folks like them too.

    Insuring older pilots

Liability is the issue. Both of these gentlemen have sizable estates. Airplane loss wouldn't move the needle much on their bottom lines but being the subject of a lawsuit could.

    Insuring older pilots

I have several elderly friends that own airplanes & fly regularly In fact, one friend is 93 & flies a Cardinal RG quite proficiently. I know this because I give him his flight reviews one a year as required by his insurance carrier. We flew a month ago & completed his flight review. At the...

Thinking about being a full time CFI again

So the journey officially begins. I wanted to pursue flight instructing a year & a half ago when I retired from my previous career but COVID ruined those plans. No flight schools at least in my area were hiring. For the past year I've been driving a semi truck. The money was good but the...

Thinking about being a full time CFI again

Thanks for the replies. I should add that when I said full time I will be an independent CFI on a 1099, but dedicated to one flight school. I will control how often I work. I also planned on getting CFI insurance as some have suggested. I also already have a large umbrella liability insurance...

Thinking about being a full time CFI again

Without going into all the nitty gritty details I'm considering taking a job as a full-time CFI. I haven't flown full-time as a pilot since the mid 90's. I am semi-retired, 65, & in relatively good health. The company offering the job is excited having a CFI on board that isn't just building...

    Show off your Plane!

After seeing all the beautiful & expensive airplanes on here I almost didn't want to post a picture of my old straight-tail 182 but here she is. I've owned it five years come July 1. I owned the Blank sailplane in the back too but have since sold it.

If you could choose between 2 what would you do??

I voted for the 58 model as did most others. That said, I own a 57 A model so probably a bit bias. I have a lot of 182s time in my 45+ years of flying so not a newbie. The STOL kit is worth a lot IMHO. The slow flight & stall characteristics are so much better than a standard version. Also...

    Motorcycles?

I've been riding most of my life & have owned a ton of bikes over the years. In 2005 I bought a new FJR1300. I put 30,000 miles on the bike & loved it. I went through a nasty divorce in 2009 & liquidated the 4 bikes I owned at the time to help with attorney bills. Since then, I went though a...

    Double clutching the downshift.

I agree with you about using the clutch. When Covid-19 slowed the pilot jobs I took a job driving truck. I really enjoy it. I drive 3,000 miles a week & have weekends off.
