    which iPad

I recently updated to a 11" iPad pro. I use it a lot while flight instructing along with my Sentry. When I use it in my airplane I have it on my lap on a clipboard. I then suction cup my large size iPhone on the side of my windshield. I primarily use my iPhone unless I want to see greater...

    Rental Pilot vs. Ownership

For once I lucked out. I purchased my 182 6 years ago with cash. At the time I debated over financing it & keep my principle invested but since it has doubled in value in that six years I don't regret my decision. I only average around 50 hours a year but I'm also a full time CFI & get more...

    What's with "SEEYUH!"?

I was with a student the other day & we were number one to land with a PC-12 behind us & an SR22 behind him. After we cleared the runway tower told the PC-12 they were cleared to land & told the SR22 to follow the Pilatus & that they were #2. The SR22 pilot said "Roger, we have the platypus...

    slips in a 182???

I also own a 182A with 4500 airframe hours. My flaps look like new. Just how do you know your flap damage was caused by slips? The Vfe is only 100 MPH, so I think using them at high speed could be the real issue. .02

Thinking about a pair of New Balance sneakers.

In my part of the world we prefer Georgia Boot Romeo's. Sneakers are sissy shoes.

Buying a plane that isn't local.

When I bought my 182 six years ago airplanes weren't moving all that fast. The airplane was 250nm away & I had several phone conversations with the sellers & got a digital copy of the logbooks. I told them I was a cash buyer & they offered to fly the airplane to me & let me see it in person...

My new engine is harder to start

I had the same issue with my 182. It was that way the first 5 years I owned it. I just figured that 0-470 was just too much for the battery so I ordered a new Concorde battery last fall. When the mechanic installed the battery he checked the rest of the electrical system & found a loose...

    Apparently, the tower just closed

I had different experience today with one of my students. Our mission was to take his new to him 182RG to a nearby class D airport & get his transponder certified. I noticed when looking through his logbooks that it was a few months out of date. We reviewed the flight before departing our...

    2021 flight hours

I just added mine up to renew my airplane insurance. Just a little under 400 hours. Since I just began instructing full time again in August that wasn't too bad.

    CFI Rates - Independent

I charge $55 flight, $45 ground/Sim. I only charge when the engine is running unless the lesson calls for extensive ground time ie X-C planning. I'm an experienced CFI that also owns an airplane (don't instruct in that) & feel I have a lot to offer to my learners. That said, I'm also retired...

Is There A Grumman Guru In The House?

I flight instruct in an AA5 Traveler & have time in AA-1Bs. Since Grummans are bonded instead of riveted there are some issues with the bonding agent (read glue). Make sure there are no areas where the metal appears to be separating. The AA-1 airplanes are quite sporty to fly.

My new airplane has a weird propeller. What's the deal?

The Cessna 184RG happens to be my favorite airplane. The gear never comes down & there's a wing spar AD that has to be done every 100 hours of flight. Otherwise it's a great airplane.

    Starting flight school

Study, study, study. Speaking as a CFI everyone wants to fly the airplane...that's the fun part. Not everyone wants to buckle down & study For now, study flight controls & the four forces acting on an airplane in flight. Your instructor will appreciate it.

    Logbook Legitimacy?

The time a CFI spends in the right seat most definitely make one a better pilot. I, for example, started instructing full-time again five months ago. Prior to that I was flying my 182 around 60 hours a year & doing some instructing. Now that I'm full-time instructing again I've noticed my...

    Overflying your area radio calls?

I'm the OP & was just wondering if this was a new thing being taught. I'm recently back to instructing full time & thought maybe it was a new procedure that should I should be aware of. Plus it's fricking annoying.

    Overflying your area radio calls?

I am indeed flying out of HRI. I don't believe there's been parachute activities over Hermiston for years. My complaint is that there are so many airports in our area on 122.8 it's very frustrating. I like to monitor the frequency while in the training area instructing but sometimes it's...

How do we (you) afford to fly?

Debt free. Decent nest egg put away. I flight instruct full-time so I can afford owning my 182. Actually, I'm loving this stage of my life. It's great being a CFI without the worry of paying the bills.

    Overflying your area radio calls?

I instruct out of a small uncontrolled field in Eastern Oregon. I've been a CFI at this airport for only four months. The field elevation is 650' & we get very little traffic. I should also add I've been flying for nearly 5 decades & have been a CFI most of that time. So not new to aviation...

Anyone around Campbellsville KY that has intimate knowledge of Comanche aircraft. Need a pre buy.

The only slightly negative I have to say about Comanche's is the size of the windshield. I've flown both the single & twin versions & when banking it seems like the upward visibility through the turn is quite obstructed. You're really going to notice it coming from a Traveler with a panoramic...
