Any good landing tips while on final?

Don't over control. Many learners are constantly moving the ailerons & elevator. I accuse them of trying to wear out the hinges. One you have a stabilized approach established make very small corrections but only as needed. Of course, shifty winds with changing velocities require more...

Looking for an AA5 and PA-28 in the NW FL area

At 6'6" tall the AA5 canopy can be a challenge. I instruct in an AA5 & have a short, high-density foam cushion that I put in place of the factory seat cushion for my taller learners. I love the AA5 but wish it was a bit taller in the cabin. I'm 5'10" & have had my head bonked on the canopy...

    CFI in shorts?

Thanks for all the replies. I instructed for 5 hours today in Eastern Oregon & it was in the low 90's. I wore my jeans & polo shirt. It was way too warm for jeans. After reading all the responses, I'll be sporting my shorts with my New Balance shoes for the next few months. For the record...

    CFI in shorts?

Back when I started instructing in the mid 70's we wore dress slacks, dress shoes, & tie. The 141 school I flew for required it. I was 18. I I know this sounds weird to the younger crowd. I'm instructing full time again. In my mid-60's. I flight instruct in eastern WA/OR where the temps...

    You know you’re getting old….

I remember when there were FSS stations (I know redundant) everywhere. You could actually walk in and talk to a live briefer. I loved the clatter of the teletype machines. The other day I made one of my students call 1-800-WX-Brief because she had only used ForeFlight for her weather source...

    Landings in wind

One of the biggest errors pilots make is neutralizing the control wheel prior to touchdown. It seems easier to hold a stick into the wind than a control wheel. We become so accustomed to having the yoke centered when we touch down that it just seems wrong to have it angled when we land. Make...

Las Vegas to Eastern Oregon in PA-38 Tomahawk

The ironic part of this scheme is in the 50 years this CFI has been flying he's only had one total engine failure...dead stick landing in...you guessed it...a Tomahawk. A little deja vu here. IFR (roads) was already thought.

Las Vegas to Eastern Oregon in PA-38 Tomahawk

Let's just say I know a CFI that's been asked to go to Las Vegas with a student pilot & bring his newly purchased Tomahawk to Central Oregon. I'm thinking the best route considering the aircraft involved would be to scoot over to California & come north. What say you?

Ever have a nightmare about flying?

Even though I'm a full time CFI that experiences a lot of real life strange flight situations I never dream about them. I have had a reoccurring nightmare about hitting power lines though. I stay clear of those suckers!

    High Wing vs Low Wing

How many low-winged birds have you seen in nature? Case solved. Even though I own a Cessna & love the way it flies I prefer the flight visibility out of a low wing airplane.

Age When You Passed Inst. Check Ride

18 here. That was in a airplane with one Nav/Com. Lot's of dialing in those days to find intersections. Now that I'm instruction full time again I'm amazed how many modern day pilots can't properly track a VOR theses days. The magenta line has spoiled us.

How long did the commercial maneuvers take to master?

None of them are difficult. Learn the procedure step by step & practice. I disagree that they're not useful. I use turns about a point when ever someone wants to see & orbit an object on the ground. A chandelle could get you out of a pinch someday.

    CO Alarm Help

I started getting 75ppm in my 182 last fall. I though perhaps the high concentration of smoke from our numerous forest fires. When I had my annual done in October I mentioned it to the shop. They did a very detailed inspection & found two nuts missing on one of my exhaust outlets on my...

Best options for a current 141 student to switch

Perhaps the pace & demands of a 141 school are a bit much right now. I used to instruct an airport that was 20 miles from another airport that had a well know community college part141 flight program. We used to inherit some of their "washouts". Most of them went on & became great pilots...

When does insurance rates not improve with hours logged?

I believe recent hours has a lot to do with it. In the past I was probably flying my 182 around 60 hours per year. I also did a little freelance flight instructing. I recently renewed my policy & nearly doubled my hull coverage. I thought my premiums would really increase. It hardly moved...

    Sport pilot school

There's a flying club here in Walla Walla that offers instruction in a Technam. They have several instructors & a DPE. You'll have to join their club but I believe they offer short term memberships. PM me if you want more info.

    30% increase in flying cost.

I must be about the same age as the last two posters. I paid $15.00 per hour for a Cherokee 150. It was seven years old at the time & I thought in was ancient! The instructor was $7.00 per hour, but...I was making a whopping $1.60 pumping gas at a full service station. I thought my...

    172 Approach Speed

Wow it all sounds so complicated. We are talking a 172 here. After my students get fairly consistent with their landings I cover the A/S indicator & we fly the pattern a bunch of times without A/S. Isn't everyone taught this? I realize I'm an old CFI with old ideas.
