Most Memorable Flight or Moment of 2022

My favorite memory for 2022 is flying this Debonair from Minnesota to Hermiston,OR the first part of December. We added it our rental fleet where I flight instruct.

    50 NM Cross Country?

Anytime you take off from one airport & land at another it XC time but...it can't be counted as XC towards a certificate if it's not over 50nm.

    Why Can't I Understand Holding Patterns.....@#$%!

Sometimes we have to back to basics. I give a lot of flight reviews. One of my favorite things to do is have the pilot fly different courses to & from a VOR. Too often they get heading & radial mixed up. The radial only goes out from the station. When you're flying on a specified radial it...

    Update about AggieMike88

It's great that you did what was best for you. I simply love instructing. I instructed full time in my younger days, flew corporate & 135 for about seven years. I never was interested in the airlines & back in the 80's jobs were tough to get. After starting a family I quit flying & after a...

Can you fly with more than one CFI?

I always encourage my students to fly with other CFI's if the opportunity arrises. I tell them that will give them the chance just to see how crappy of an instructor I really am! Fortunately, no student has reported back to me that this was the case. 47 years as a CFI & still at it.

    …When to Hang It Up!

I'm 66 & instructing full time. I fly my 182 for pleasure & trips on a regular basis. I don't even think about hanging it up. My 50 years of flying experience seems to attract all the students I can handle. I do yearly flight reviews (required by his insurance) of a 94 year old that flies...

Piper Tomahawk 125HP upgrade. Any difference in performance?

I'm currently giving instruction in one that a student pilot purchased. It performs much better than say a Cessna 150. It's been over 30 years since I instructed in an original one so a bit hard for me to compare. We took off today at gross weight & it took no time to climb to 4,500'. We...

    Nicotine addicts

My how things have changed over the years. The CFI that I hired for most of my certificates & ratings in the 70s was a chain smoker. One after another. I remember during instrument training his smoke would linger under my hood. I probably could have logged actual!

This is why I like doing young eagles flights

You have to be an EAA member & pass their Youth Protection background check. Otherwise no minimum pilot requirements other than at least a Private Pilot & be current. If you're proficient too that's a real plus. It's really a lot of fun & helps introduce youth to aviation.

    Commercial written....

I'd recommend two podcasts. AviationNewsTalk & Opposing Bases. I listen to both every week as I drive to the airport to Instruct.

    July 28, 1985

Congratulations. I took my first flight lesson on my 16th birthday in 1972. June 14th marked 50 years in aviation. I'm in my retirement years now a days & instructing full time hoping to recapture some of the funds I've frittered away.

    DUI conviction medical ETA?

I have a student close to solo but kept putting off getting his medical certificate. He came in for a lesson the other day & said he'd taken his exam but the certificate would be delayed due to a DUI charge. It was just over 2 years ago & his BAC was well over the legal limit. Unfortunately &...

    VOR Only Instrument Flying

My first airplane only had one Nav/Com. It did have an ILS on the one Nav/Com head & marker beacons.. I flew actual IFR in it all the time but I always had an escape route ie VFR WX close by. I didn't consider this unsafe. I did do a lot of channel flipping though to identify intersections...

    Do you tip your CFI?

You are right CFI's are not on the same level as airline pilots. I still treat airline pilots with respect though.

    Do you tip your CFI?

I must be a lucky CFI. I get tips all the time. Because I commute 60 miles to one of my teaching airports a student recently gave me $200.00 in gas cards. She said it was for being so patient with her. I get cash tips at least monthly. I've also been given sweatshirts, t-shirts, & hats...
