    How common are near misses?..

It's a matter of what you consider to be a "near miss". For example, on my second time soloing around the pattern, super busy day, I was instructed to land on a runway which had a plane on it sitting (not moving) at an intersection. I was sorely missing my CFI in the right seat as I nervously...

    "Real world" XC planning

Foreflight (or one of its ilk) + skyvector. If it's a place I haven't been, I'll usually post here too for advice from locals. Paper? I think I've only filled three navlogs in my life - during training :)

    Enjoy this off-beat eBay ad

Funnily enough, I've been contemplating getting a car to go to 24hl... this may just fit the bill, especially considering I drove one just like it for a couple years in my youth. Let's see if I can round up my compadres.

    Near-Fatal Spin on First Solo

Scary - and well done, sir. Resourcefulness is a critical piloting skill! All I can see from my still rookie perspective of around 300 hours - I'm lucky to be alive, but it takes real determination to kill yourself in a small plane, especially the common trainers. There is no one thing, or...

    Aircraft ownership

That's what we do. Our aircraft is registered to an LLC, and each of the three of us own a third of the LLC's assets (bank account and plane, basically). We charge a small hourly fee for the engine reserve fund, and split costs three ways. It's a perfect way to own a plane, IMO.

An old guy finally learns to fly

Fantastic job, pilot Mike! well done. Like the old saying goes, how did it feel to lose all the dead weight from the right seat? I'm in my 40's - an "old guy" like you. I, too, always wanted to learn how to fly from when I was a kid. My dream was crushed when I was diagnosed as a type 1...

...being a GA Private Pilot and flying yourself there: Priceless

And I hate it when ignorant people condescend to others because of course, only their experience in life is relevant. I carry a specific effect of an old back injury that makes it more or less impossible for me to sit in any chair - on the ground or in the air - that has a straight or...

    Cockpit Controls with Unknown Functions

Yeah... Like, I have a 430 and a slaved 496, and if asked me how to use them beyond basic functionality... No clue.

...being a GA Private Pilot and flying yourself there: Priceless

I'd have smiled politely, pulled out my phone, turned on the video camera, and asked the attendant to ask the guy to remove the device again. If he complies, no problem - seat goes and stays back the rest of the flight. If he doesn't - I enjoy his arrest once we land, and happily provide...

    The 25/25 myth

In my 182 P-Ponk, I follow the procedure given to me by the CFI's that taught me HP and checked me out on the plane: at 500-700 ft, go 24"/2400 RPM, lower the nose to normal climb, and then keep that until leveling off. I tend to then go to 23/2300. You're saying that damages the engine?

    The Autobahn is fun

Sounds fun! Fastest I'd gone on the autobahn was 135mph or so in an unrestricted stretch. The car (another C-series, bigger engine probably) topped out at that point. I was still blown out by other cars going faster, sometimes much faster. In truth, you can, ah, do that in the US too :)...

the road to my (your?) own LearJet

I don't. I used to, then I got my PPL, and realized just how boring flying a jet would be. Unless you allow for a crew as well, at which point, sure  My dream has shifted to owning something like a Socata or Pilatus, but since I doubt I'd ever be able to afford one, I have settled on...

"FAA Bans GA Ride Sharing Companies"

hold on, now. The pro-rata rule is what makes this sort of thing a non-commercial operation for casual/recreational pilots, like me. I would not go out of my way to spend money to fly someone somewhere, but that's exactly what the pro-rata rule stipulates; passengers can only pay a portion of...

"FAA Bans GA Ride Sharing Companies"

The more I read the thread, the more I learn (honestly, not sarcastically). I want to try and follow the money. The primary argument against this being successful is that it is not profitable, since it is still limited by the pro rata rule. I think that's a superficial argument at best, and...

    Oh boy, I almost forgot

So flew out to o28 yesterday to pick up my daughter from camp... It has been awhile since I had to do a go around, but goodness me, that's a crazy strip to land into! It looks pretty tame, really - on top of a hill, very clear, has a bit of a bump in the middle so you can't really see one...
