    GPS backup

It's going to work really well in those scenarios where GPS is needed the most - IFR in IMC.

Cleaning out shop, KT76A any value?

I haven't checked the market lately, but a used GTX 327 is about $600. With that in mind, I'd say a fair asking price for a working 76 would be around $100.

    Mid-air, KMEV Minden-Tahoe

No, I mean there are a lot more ground receivers for Mode S, feeding flightaware and other sites, compared to UAT receivers. That's why a lot of the UAT traffic isn't showing online.

    Mid-air, KMEV Minden-Tahoe

Mode S or UAT? Seems like there are a lot more mode S receivers, compared to UAT.

    Let's talk turbines for SELs

Yep, live to work seems (or seemed) to be the norm in the US. The new generation, not so much, though. They definitely value their free time and personal lives more. Europe has always been work to live. You could do it under experimental-exhibition. Look at the biplane with a jet engine flying...

It's not a SEL at that point.

I like the anonymous feature of UAT ADS-B. I'm still a bit surprised that it wasn't allowed for Mode S transponders when used for part 91 flights. There's no need for all the GA haters and creeps to track every plane in the sky, with instant access to their names and addresses.

    Flying with low/flat strut

Hurricane Sandy says hi :). Last second fleeing could happen for a law-abiding pilot that tries to avoid flying an unairworthy airplane, in the hope that an A&P will find the time to look at it and fix it. And that is one of many potential (if improbable) scenarios where a pilot might need to...

    Flying with low/flat strut

Hurricane is approaching, roads are already gridlocked. Weather is still good enough for GA flying. Would you risk getting stuck on a highway, potentially running out of fuel and with no shelter, or would you fly away in a plane with a deflated strut?

    Shutting down

I don't think it really matters. My logic says mags, then master, because it allows me to complete my shutdown checks (which may include checking engine instruments, writing down times/fuel remaining) while having a secured engine. And I can have lights on in the plane while doing that at night.

How much ethanol is too much

Modern heat pumps in a Chicago-type climate, powered by a natural gas powerplant can be more efficient than burning natural gas in a household furnace.

    Flying with low/flat strut

The way 91.3(b) is written, you are most likely correct. Not that I'd care if it was an actual emergency, like someone in need of urgent medical attention or an angry mob chasing us.

    Flying with low/flat strut

Use your imagination. What would you consider immediate danger to someone's life? Which part of "instantly" are you having trouble with? Did those tires you sheared the valve stems off deflate in the blink of an eye? Or did that happen over a non-instant period of time, in the order of...

How much ethanol is too much

With the current efficiency of heat pumps, you can make more heat by burning the fuel to generate electricity for the heat pump.

All things equal - which approach are you taking

Dial ILS freq in the receiver. Follow the needles. Couple autopilot if available. I don't think that it takes less to set-up and activate an RNAV approach.
  19. AV8R_87

    Flying with low/flat strut

Immediate danger to someone's life, for example. Even if you shear the valve, the tire won't deflate instantly. Plus, you're at a place where maintenance services are available so you can have both fixed. Drive your car over some rough roads at the recommended pressure, and then lower it by...

    Flying with low/flat strut

See post #9 for what I would do. I'm sure Piper recommends the same. But if it was an emergency that required the plane to be flown, might as well make things a bit better.
