    DOGE and the FAA

You might want to dig in a little further on those two examples. Neither was destroyed by mismanagement of their budgets, economies nor fiat currencies.

Yep, both of those things can be true. :-)

    DOGE and the FAA

Trust me, I'm not arguing that government waste is a good thing. But it's also true that I'm old enough to have been hearing the "can't go on like this much longer" for 50 years, so I'm suspicious that, finally, this time it will be true. Heck, when I bought my first house, in the 80's, I...

    DOGE and the FAA

No serious economist wants that. Deficit spending is one of the most important tools a government has available to it to stabilize the economy during things like covid, the great recession, the dotcom recession, the late 80's recession, the early 80's recession, the opec oil crisis, etc. The...

    DOGE and the FAA

I thought the flipside was that overruns were vastly less likely to injure the humans on the plane than getting too slow and spinning in. Or have I invented a memory?

    DOGE and the FAA

Yes, that's right. Given 50-ish years (the ones I can remember) of programs like this being washouts and given the two guys being put in charge this time around, seems like a safe bet.

    DOGE and the FAA

Nah. Sure, often the single largest. But that doesn't mean 'only', or even 'only meaningful' expense. Especially when talking about a company that has data centers and is buying hundreds of millions of dollars worth of gear to try and be relevant in the AI space.

And, it's unlikely that he's actually any good at 6D chess, since he's in the global top 20 in diablo. Takes time to get good at both those games and he's busy with other things.

As a business guy, you probably know this, but he didn't cut 80% of costs. He cut 80% of staff. Big, big difference.

https://finance.yahoo.com/news/twitters-revenue-collapses-84-tesla-171535190.html " Musk bought Twitter for $44 billion, but turning the company around has been a big challenge. The New York Times recently reported that X made only $114 million in revenue in the U.S. during the second quarter...

    Tug advice.

One of my favorite parts of this industry is that half of it is "you must make this out of carbon fiber so it's light enough to be profitable" and the other half is "you must make this out of the heaviest and thickest metal you can so that the things in the first half don't go rolling places...

[rant] The really bad design thread

They are crazy. These cans are awesome. :-) Ok, they are mostly awesome. The last time this came up the conversation went a bit longer and deeper. For *me* they are awesome because the gas tanks I want to fill are on top of the engines. Log splitter, mower, ATV are the only gas guzzlers I have...

Rumours of my demise have been greatly exaggerated (my airplane is now a go-to image for crash articles)

So your theory is that the AP, which has operated for 178 years, has been outside the law all this time and it's just a matter of someone suing them for royalties for a photo of their airplane to get their attention? I suppose that's one way to read the situation. Another is that photos in...

And this one is even more cut and dried than that. The photo was shot by an AP photographer, not the POA member. So the only person with a royalty claim is the photographer, not the POA member. And, since they work for AP, clearly signed away those rights properly from the beginning.
