First day of flight training in a week and I still need a headset—what are your suggestions?

I am amazed at how many of my students own expensive headsets.

First day of flight training in a week and I still need a headset—what are your suggestions?

I use my David Clarks about four or five days a week. Very reliable since 1989.

    Enough student pilots for instructors?

Our local flight training facility has grown from three instructors to seven over the past few years. The student roster is very large. Future? Who knows? I have been instructing since 2001 and never saw it as busy as it is right now. The cost of learning to fly has steadily increased but...

Would cranking for 10 seconds with the mixture in idle cut off pre oil the engine?

If what you suggest would be a benefit, don't you think the folks who designed and built the engine would have included that advice in the operating instructions?

Is it safe to fly on a Boeing 737-Max?

They are flying every day, right? Thousands of passengers. I'd be comfortable flying on one.

Help me choose a plane for my mission (Hawaii)

It's my understanding that they flew them over there. From the googler: "Civilian pilots flew O-2s in flights of four from Cessna’s Wichita, Kansas, plant to Hamilton AFB in California. At Hamilton, the Air Force removed all the seats except the left front and installed extra fuel and oil...

Help me choose a plane for my mission (Hawaii)

In the 1960s, the Air Force flew quite a few of them from the US to Vietnam.

    engine out, reducing drag

I can't see any advantage to having the throttle wide open, but if the engine is out it may not make any difference. Trying a restart? I'd probably open it as far as I do on a ground start. No need to add any excess fuel in that engine compartment.

Looking for a Mentor/Counselor for future pilot

I think the trap is not answering honestly on the FAA application. It asks about disabilities. If you have one, say so.

Our flight training facility requires us to put some limitations. Some of the CFIs simply write under limitations, "with CFI approval."

Of course, the certificate does not require an instructor's endorsement, but the logbook does.

    engine out, reducing drag

I think if the prop is stopped it will give less drag than if it is windmilling, but the problem is, how do you get it to stop? You would need to increase pitch and get very slow, and that is not as easy to control as establishing best glide speed with it turning.

Lindberg is correct. An instructor is required to sign for training flights. As a solo student, pilot in command, your signature is not required.

    Air-to-Air Cessna 182

Yes. Cowl flaps are open for takeoff and climb, then closed for cruise.

Shouldn't the cowl flaps be closed?

    DPE PPL price

I did my CFI checkride in 2001. I drove from Duluth to Saint Paul to do the oral portion, so even if the weather had improved, I didn't have an airplane that day. In fact, we completed the checkride after five weather cancellations. Last week one of our students did the same thing - drove to...

Looking for a Mentor/Counselor for future pilot

There are many paths to an aviation career. I was a military pilot but think that in today's military it is much more difficult to get a job flying airplanes. The civilian route has several options: a Part 141 school, which is formal classroom and structured training, and Part 61 which is...

If you want something more urban, we have very good hiking trails on Rib Mountain in the state park here in Wausau, with abundant hotels and restaurants nearby. You can easily get an Uber or Lyft ride from the airport (KAUW). There is also the relatively level Mountain-Bay Trail from Rib...

    Fibbing on FAA medical application

I didn't intentionally lie, but I did forget to list a condition that I had reported earlier. When I said, "previously reported," the FAA came back and questioned that, since it had not been reported on my previous application. I needed to get a letter from the treating physician. If you are...
