How do perform short field landings for practical test

The POH gives you procedures. The others give you techniques. Follow the procedures and learn the techniques that give you the best results.

    Yeah... you can double that.

What would you have done? Inclement weather coming.

No one knows for sure, and I am not going to second-guess your decision. You had a lot of information about the weather, and you landed safely. Good outcome. Relax. What would I have done? Same as you, and I have.

Logging cross country +50NM between Depart Dest Airports FLYING Non Direct Route

That's been my way of doing things. If I shut down, that's a completed flight and is logged on one line. If I don't, it's all part of one flight and logged on one line no matter how many places I may have landed. I don't bother logging cross country time as I don't need it. (I did three...

    Taxiway marking obstruction clearance expectations?

I, for one, do not have much faith in pilots checking NOTAMs.

Logging cross country +50NM between Depart Dest Airports FLYING Non Direct Route

I have known DPEs who insist you refer to a written checklist. You can do the before landing checklist from memory, then pick up the written checklist and glance at it, and the DPE can check the box "uses written checklists."

Am I crazy for considering a V-Tail Bo?

I owned a V-tail for 17 years, so I am a big fan. Go to Beechtalk.com and search for messages about the ruddervators. It appears there may be a solution. Mine had a useful load of 1287 lbs and I planned for 175 knots, burning about 14-15 gallons per hour. I loved that I could maintain 1,000...

    Part 61 - Number of CFI's

Sure, lack of funds is an issue. But we live in a society where rapid gratification is common. TV shows have happy endings in one hour. Commercials are thirty seconds. People who don't like to read a book listen to an audio version while driving. We don't have phone conversations, we text...

I suspect it is somewhere around 75-80%.

    Part 61 - Number of CFI's

I agree with you. I have had to "fire" some student pilots. Fortunately, not very often. As a student pilot in the U.S. Air Force, the instructors liked to say, "With enough bananas, we can teach a monkey to fly." I guess that was supposed to build our confidence. The failure rate was...

    Student Pilot down KLHV

I personally do a lot of touch and go landings with my students. That is the law of primacy at work - I learned to fly in the US Air Force, and we routinely did touch and goes in all of the different airplanes I flew. Here, our chief instructor recommends full stop/taxi back for the first...

    Opinions sought

Fly every chance you get. You can learn a lot, even from pilots who aren't that good at flying.

    I cant find a hangar.

During my ownership of three different airplanes, I had hangars facing N, S, E and West. The best one was facing south in Duluth, Minnesota. Despite the cold, the snow melted fairly quickly on the asphalt in front of the hangar. I've been in the upper Midwest for many years, and always kept a...

    Part 61 - Number of CFI's

Seems to me there is a shortage of CFIs. I have received a number of inquiries to work somewhere else. The three closest flight schools are currently not offering instruction because they can't find CFIs. I have never heard any of my fellow instructors complain about their pay. Once they...

    Part 61 - Number of CFI's

Every CFI uses the same syllabus, but just like any other organization there are individuals who are less diligent than others. We have grown a lot in the past couple of years, and some of the newbies are not being monitored closely by management. It's one of my frustrations when I fly with...

    Part 61 - Number of CFI's

Sometimes. But the way we work we usually catch things that were missed in a timely fashion. Fortunately, the syllabus requires students to fly with more than one CFI.

Sumping fuel in the desert/preflight checklists?

Which is worse, having the fuel evaporate into the atmosphere, or burning it and having it go into the atmosphere?

    CFI Responsibility

If it is a Flight Review, we take the risk. If it is going to be ongoing training, we require the school to be named as additional insured with a waiver of subrogation. It has never been a problem with insurance companies - apparently they are pleased when their customers get additional flight...

Sumping fuel in the desert/preflight checklists?

I agree. Any water in fuel that has just been added will take a while to settle, so sumping immediately after fueling probably isn't going to find it. As for not using a preflight checklist, remember that use of the written checklist is required on checkrides. I suggest doing your preflight...
