Tach to Hobbs conversion for logging

That is what I was told when I left the Air Force. We logged flight time from takeoff to landing, not movement with intention of flight to stopping after flight. It would have added about 440 hours to my total time, but I didn't bother. I didn't keep a personal logbook while in the military...

    New to this.

There are a surprising number of scholarships. Most are geared towards young folks, but it's worth it to look into them. Many go unawarded because no one applies.

GA transportation of (personal) firearms and ammo

My father was a cowboy, and he loved watching western movies and TV shows. He especially liked the scenes where Roy Rogers or Tom Mix or Hopalong Cassidy fired a Colt .45 right next to the horse's ear in a pursuit. Yeah, right. Horses love that.

    SPL vs PPL

    Aha. I was unaware.

    SPL vs PPL

Seems odd. Private pilot candidates must have a minimum of ten hours of solo. I wonder how she got around that.

Cfi lesson plan from scratch or pre made lesson plan

This is a part 61 flight training facility. Six instructors, five Cessnas. I have worked there 14 years.

Cfi lesson plan from scratch or pre made lesson plan

We use a syllabus that spells out what to cover on the ground and in the air for each lesson. Students have a copy. After each lesson, the CFI and student both initial the copy on file. When I fly with another instructor's student, I can tell from the syllabus exactly what they have done and...

    CFI-Initial

I would give the same advice I got when I asked a local DPE that question 24 years ago. He said, "Go to (name of local CFI), her students pass the checkride." I did, and I did.

    Meat eaters need not reply

Our youngest son is vegan and once told me at a Vietnamese restaurant, "You should try this tofu, Dad, it tastes just like meat." I told him when I wanted something that tastes like meat, the answer is very simple.

What should spin training include for CFI?

I did a lot of spins in the T-37. Years later, to get the endorsement, I told my instructor I was a bit nervous about doing spins in a Cessna 150. "Why?" she asked. "Well, I am used to doing them with a parachute and an ejection seat." It turned out the 150 was fun to spin. I have more...

    CFI logging instruction in IMC

You're right, of course. I wasn't thinking of sport pilot instructor, etc.

    CFI logging instruction in IMC

I don't have an instrument rating on my flight instructor certificate. I have one on my commercial certificate. I am not aware of any CFI who is not instrument rated. All private pilot candidates must have three hours of simulated instrument training, therefore, a CFI who is not also a CFII...

Plane loaded with drugs makes emergency landing on Southern California highway

It depends, right? You can drop things if they don't create a hazard to persons or property. But who determines if there's a hazard? I was involved in dropping hundreds of paratroopers. Seems like a "hazard to persons." <g>

    Proceed on course VFR

Sometimes I hear "Altitude is at YOUR discretion." You have no obligation to request an altitude change if you have not been assigned an altitude.

What advice would you give someone for a CFI checkride?

There's good advice above. Also, when you are demonstrating a maneuver, if you start to exceed the standards, remember to say, "And this is a common mistake. Here's how to correct it." Then do.

Do you subscribe to Windy.com Premium subscription? Do you find it beneficial for trip planning?

Well, METARs don't give winds aloft, just surface winds.

    Hard to sell aircraft

For a long time, I told my wife the airplane was for sale. I put the sign in the window right after I closed the hangar door. Then I retired from full time work and agreed to sell it for sure. I expected it would take six months to a year. It was a V-tail Bonanza, and as soon as I mentioned...

    Part Time CFI

It's not an issue. We use an online scheduling system, and I just block off times when I am not available.

Plane crashes into hangar in Long Beach, Ca.

Yes, it will pitch up with the addition of full power, but it is not hard to control it without the need to trim immediately. We teach Cram power, Control pitch, Climb, Clean up and Communicate. I wonder how many go-arounds the student had practiced.
