Is it normal for a student pilot to feel sad like this?

I know exactly when I made my very best landing. It was in 1972, at night, in Da Nang on a wet runway. The C-130 has a micro switch that locks the gear lever down when there is weight on the main gear. I heard that "click" but since the runway was very long, did not brake or use reverse for...

Woman Backs Into Propeller, Kansas, fatal, 10/27

I have a CFI friend who yells, "Stand back or you're gonna die!" He believes non-aviators may not know what "clear" means, but they will understand this warning.

Team effort or lone wolf training?

I did my CFI training with two other candidates, and I think we all benefited from observing when we were in the back seat.

Woman Backs Into Propeller, Kansas, fatal, 10/27

A couple years ago I met a CFI who had walked into a prop after a long day of teaching at Ann Arbor, the University of Michigan flying club. She had a lot of injuries to one arm, very lucky to be alive. She blamed it on fatigue. Generally, CFIs are very aware of the risk. I do exit a running...

Foreflight slow on iPad mini6. Anyone else seeing this?

I use a mini 6 with a yoke mount on cross country flights. Never had a problem.

Is it normal for a student pilot to feel sad like this?

If it helps to know this: I have been doing primary instruction for 23 years. Over time, I have learned most students have somewhere between 80 and 100 landings with their instructor before they solo. I think the CFI rating is the hardest, but I never had a private pilot certificate. For me...

Rant: Exercising PIC, no not that PIC

It does happen in cars, too. I owned a new 1970 Barracuda that developed a cracked exhaust manifold.

Rant: Exercising PIC, no not that PIC

Reminds me of the Abilene Paradox. Put it in the Google.

    Vultures...correct last second maneuver?

I think most birds will tuck wings and descend if they fear a collision. The exception is eagles. They think they own the sky and they do not alter course for you.

    Busted altitude

If ATC advises you of a deviation, you have to learn to say, "Student training in progress."

    Thank You for Your Service

I went to the University of Missouri, where ROTC was required for the first two years. It's a land grant university. After two years of Army ROTC, I joined the Air Force when I graduated.

    Thank You for Your Service

Yes, I do want to be recognized. By fellow veterans. And I want to return that recognition.

    Thank You for Your Service

Today I was sitting in the Rochester, NY airport waiting for my flight when a young man came up to me and, seeing my Vietnam Veteran cap, said, "Excuse me, sir. Thank you for your service." I was a bit surprised and just replied, "You're welcome." It's a natural reply to a thank you and just...

Tach to Hobbs conversion for logging

Maybe when you were flying A-10s, but in the C-130 the flight engineer wrote down the time the wheels left the ground and again when we touched down. And that is what was logged. I didn't keep a personal logbook then, but when I left the Air Force, they handed me a computer printout which I...

    Size of hangar

I don't remember ever seeing a hangar with a roll up door, but I suppose there are some. Bifold doors are probably the most common, and some of the local private hangars have tilt doors. If it snows where you are, be sure to avoid any doors that slide side to side. I had to deal with that in...

Anyone familiar with Brian Smith (Aerosmith Aviation) at KRYY

George Braly is the guy who started everyone on lean of peak operations when he started building and installing GAMIjectors years ago. He and John Deakin and Walter Atkinson taught a lot of folks how to run LOP in their Advanced Pilot Seminars. Walter and John have both gone west.

FIA Flight Instructor Airplane written exam completed today

Outstanding score, congratulations. On the idea of doing flight reviews at fly-ins, remember the minimum time is an hour of ground and an hour in the air, so maybe fly-ins aren't the best time to try a review. I encourage my contacts to do the WINGS program. It saves them time and money and...

Hot Air Balloon brings down antenna/tower; no injuries

Tough luck for the radio station. This is "grab the money" time for broadcasters as candidates spend everything they have leading up to the election. (One local TV station got $100,000 for a 30-second commercial in a Sunday football game right before the election in 2020. And this is a small...

    New to this.

Too late. You are too old to join the military.
