    In-Flight Mag Checks

Definitely a BAD IDEA! Mag checks are performed on the ground for a reason. They identify a potential problem BEFORE that problem could cause an issue in the air. The only reason one would have to do something like this in the air would be in diagnosing a problem that popped up during flight...

Why are airplane engine TBO hours so low?

If anything, this is contradictory. The starting, stopping, and power changes would have a detrimental effect rather than help to prolong the engine life.

Can engine heater reduce/prevent engine corrosion?

There is zero correalation between an engine heater and reduced corrosion. If anything, the heater will only promote corrosion. The purpose of an engine heater is to promote quick pumping of oil throughout the engine in order to properly and effectively lubricate metal on metal parts. The...

Owners: did you overbuy for your original expected mission?

Just make sure they are small cups and only half full

    Figuring out the wind?

In all of my landings in all of my time, I could count on one hand the number of times I have ever looked at a windsock and then it was purely to determine my choice of a landing runway. Between the AWOS, ATIS, or now the relative wind on my G5 or on my FlyQ, there is usually some voice...

    Unable to Solo, Advice needed

Congratulation! Hopefully the rest of your training goes better than the first part did. On a side note, in reading through these comments, there were an awful lot that seemed to criticize the instructor. Not knowing the particular student, I would have to think that there are a certain number...

    Boost Oxygen

"All Natural Oxygen"??? Is that somehow different from all the artificial oxygen we see at the discount stores?

    Frost removal

How is frost forming at all in a hangar? Is there something producing a lot of humidity inside the hangar? I have an unheated hangar here in WI and have never once had frost on my plane even on the coldest days. There is something else at play here.

    ForeFlight Subscription

I got the FlyQ lifetime deal last fall and couldn't be happier with it. I don't think there is anything that I'm missing by having it rather than foreflight and I absolutely hate having a subscription service. With the lifetime deal, it makes me feel like I bought the program instead of...

    Pandemic flying

I've still been flying, but have used the time to work on my instrument rating rather than some of the longer trips that I had planned for this summer. Most of my destinations were closed or cancelled so rather than not fly, I am about halfway through my hours for the IR. Hopefully I'll be...

    Preflight and runup... every time?

I'm with you on this. NEVER have I ever flown with a CFI, commercial pilot, or PPL buddies of mine who have done a post flight mag check. I don't think I've ever even even read about such a thing until this thread mentioned it.

    Tips for a fearful dog?

Try some taxiing around the airport. If he likes car rides, that would be quite similar. After a few of those "trips", take off, go around the pattern once, land, and taxi a little more. After writing this, I think that might have been a better way to try things for my wife too.

    Tips for a fearful wife?

Thanks for all of the insight, tips, and knowledge that I'm far from alone with this problem. We talked about our flight this morning and looking back she said that while she hated every minute of it, she could probably get over her fears in time. She thinks that she needs to get used to it...

    Tips for a fearful wife?

I was wondering if anyone might have some tips for getting my wife to enjoy flying or, at very least, not hate it. I was finally able to get her to take a short flight with me today and it didn't go too well. The air was quite smooth with no real turbulence and except for being a bit warm...

ATC failing to alert pilot that they’re ‘too low’

That's the whole point of an Instrument Rating and flying in IMC. You are responsible for following altitude minimums on the approach plate. Many airfields with instrumet approach procedures have no radar coverage at those low altitudes for ATC to know wheer you are at all once you are that low.

    1.3 Vso for final?

Flying a Cardinal, I like a little extra speed on final as the stabilator feels much more responsive to control input. I can come in slower if needed, but the plane seems happier flying just a bit faster.

Ground school...how did you do it?

I took my written about halfway through my training. I had a private instructor who would block out a little over two hours for each lesson. We spent about a half hour on the ground going over things (not just flight maneuver stuff), then an hour in the plane, and a half hour after going over...

H pressure brings good or poor visibility?

Absolutely! Stability and "good" weather have very little to do with one another. IMC and IFR flying is typically "stable" air.

    Map origami

They still make paper charts? I haven't seen one available at the FBO in quite a while.
