Can you learn in any plane?

If buying a twin turboprop is budget friendly for you, then buying a 172 and trading up after initial training shouldn't be an issue either.

    Altitude your discretion

Exactly! What's to stop someone from deciding to just climb up to FL25 if they feel like it. All altitudes are an option, right? Just because a controller says, "altitude at your discretion" does not mean you throw all of the rest of the regulations and your training out the window and do...

EAA Museum (Oshkosh) vs. Air Zoo (Kalamazoo)

Maybe my son and I will make a longer trip of it and hit both. After looking at the USAF museum website, it definitely looks like a cool place to check out. If anyone has any insight on the Air Zoo in Kalamazoo, I'm still looking for some thoughts.

EAA Museum (Oshkosh) vs. Air Zoo (Kalamazoo)

For those who have been to both, how do they compare. I live about 30 miles from Oshkosh so have been to the museum there several times. It is great and has plenty to see for both me and my son. We were thinking abvout heading across the lake and checking out the Air Zoo in Kalamazoo. Their...

Question - IFR flight plan through Canadian airspace?

I know if you land in Canada and come back to the United Sates you will have to go through Customs/Border Control. If you take off and land on U.S. soil and only fly through Canadian airspace, is there still a requirement to go through customs upon arrival at your destination? My guess is no...

    Boost Oxygen

Neither has moisture in it. Any moisture in a medical setting is added at through a humidifier at the point of use. Moisture in any of these tanks (industrial or medical) would cause corrosion. If there was a case of a pure oxygen tank freezing up, it would not have been because of any...

    Boost Oxygen

The actual contents are identical in every respect. The cleanliness of the tank itself may be slightly different, but they fill medical and industrial tanks from the same source where I get my tanks filled.

    Engine out at night

So far it appears that most of you only think a dark spot will be land. In the areas I often fly, a dark unlit area has just as much of a chance of being a lake or some other water. Many of you also assume that the question entails waking up in an area that you are in no way familiar with and...

    Requesting climb over airport

Corn at this point in the season is no place you want to try to land. I second the soybeans.

What are Your Thoughts About the DPE System?

I believe that being a DPE should be made a part of being a CFI. As I see it, a CFI is supposed to be able to teach you everything you need to know in order to pass a checkride and should make sure you are capable of doing so prior to signing you off for said check ride. If the CFI is capable...

    Requesting FBO/concrete parking?

Other options are Fond Du Lac or Brennand in Neeenah. Both are closer than Appleton, have hard surface parking and may have more availability this late in the game.

    Night vs IFR

I don't have any apprehension about flying at night. My night hours are much lower than instrument or day hours, but not based on fear or anxiety. Moreso, flying at night doesn't fit my schedule most of the time and those looking to go flying for fun with me usaually want to do it during the...

Cruise Altitude Shortest Flight Time with Best Economy

You mention in your original post that "assuming winds aloft have no impact on ground speed", but that is often the overriding factor for any of these decisions. While the other information is good to know, I have rarely found it to have more impact on overall ground speed than winds aloft.

    Paul B. on engines

This is absolute fact! If sales volume was anywhere near that of automobiles, the cost of new planes, parts, service and repairs, aviation fuel, and everything else GA related would drop like a rock. Unfortunately, there would also be nowhere near enough airports, hangar space, service...

Busted checkride - don't know where to go from here

Very clearly and concisely write a letter to the FAA with all of the details you mentioned above and send copies to the flight school. If everything you stated in your original post is true and not exagerated, then this guy has no business being a DPE and should never again be doing a...

Gi275 AI in all Steam out?

I like the idea of the GI275, but in practicality I am not a big fan (yet). I have two G5's that replaced the AI and HI. The vacuum system was removed at the same time. I really like these units for the info they provide and have the relative wind option as well, but the GI275 just seems so...

    Looong XC Concerns

I say, go for it. I love the long cross country trips. I did a couple with less than 200 hrs in my logbook that were 5+ hrs one direction. The main thing that I was always able to plan with was to make sure I had extra time. Don't ever make one of these trips where you have to be somewhere...

Does calm wind mean no bumps?

I've flown in 30+ kt winds and it's been smooth as silk. I've also flown in calm winds where you could barely keep from bouncing out of your seat. Winds and turbulent air have no correlation whatsoever.
