    …When to Hang It Up!

To review: after age 59 pilots are not permitted to act as pilot-in-command on international flights. Unless, of course, something bad happens to all other pilots on board. Also, if your co-pilot is younger than 60, then you can act as pilot-in-command as long as you are under 65.

    Continued Airworthiness Requirement

FAA order 8110.54A and 14(CRF) 21.50 require compliance with Continued Airworthiness. So if I have the plastic tape gap seal on my piper flight controls and the Continued Airworthiness requirement is to poke it with the Maul Fabric tester I have to buy the tester $450 to comply with the...

    Insurance or not

Several low time pilots less than 100hr flying old cheap high performance single engine and twin engine planes. Makes you wonder what insurance company would insure them for liability at any price. Probably do not even do required inspections, just blow that off too. So I try to just stay out...

RC guy plays air traffic control.

I still don't see a airport replacement for Chicago Meigs just when are they going to replace it. It's been almost 20 years and yes I was wrong they did pay the $33K fine after spending $500K to fight it. It appears the only thing Friends of Meigs Field did is cost Chicago tax payers $500K for...

RC guy plays air traffic control.

What airport fears the FAA after Chicago Meigs, most do what they want or just blow off the FAA as they know they wont do anything. No one went to jail over Meigs, I don't think they ever paid the FAA $33,000 fine.

    Flight control paint

How much is too much paint on a flight control before you have to balance it. If you do a little touch up paint does that require a new balance to be done. Just how much is too much and require you balance the flight control. I am sure their are planes around that have not been washed in years...

    Turning the Prop backward

The age old question, can you turn the prop backward without damage to the vacuum pump. One of aviation’s old wives’ tales is that you’ll wreck your vacuum pump if you move the prop backward. Fortunately, that’s not true. While most vacuum pumps are unidirectional—they either turn clockwise or...
