Fuel question for the Aztec pilots.

Neither the Apache nor Aztec ever had any fuel return to the tanks. That is only on Continental engines as their fuel injection system works that way. The Lycoming/Bendix system has no fuel return.

    Hauling Checks

I lived it. Don't need to read it. Upper Midwest weather was a treat when you are expected to go and to make it. One winter was enough.

    DC One-X vs Bose A-20

I love my One-X. I have worn Bose and Lightspeed. The One-X has good sound, great ANR, and are comfortable.

Calculating the Rent vs Buy equation

It isn't so much a matter of calculating for convenience as it is calculating for possibility. You seem to be assuming that there are available airplanes that you can rent for these excursions. Have you checked that out? Perhaps there are, but it is kind of rare. If the class of plane you...

Calculating the Rent vs Buy equation

You really can't come at this from an accounting perspective. If you are looking for something to make economic sense, frame your pilot's license, hang it over the mantle, and find another hobby. Rental airplanes are primarily for local flights. If all you are looking for is local flights for...

Anyone around Campbellsville KY that has intimate knowledge of Comanche aircraft. Need a pre buy.

I speak pretty fair Comanche and can travel. Best to start with a logbook review. If that is reasonable, then the physical inspection. Most of the no-goes I find are on the logbook review, saving the cost of travel and whatnot for the physical inspection. PM if you want more information.

    Piper Meridian Maintenance

Call Ron Mangon at Mangon Aircraft in Petaluma, CA. His shop - a Piper Service Center - maintains many of both and can likely give you a pretty good run down.

Flying Alaska (Part 8) - Gustavus AK to Friday Harbor WA

Tailwinds make it easier. When the weather is pretty clear, it is absolutely gorgeous flying. With the improvements in facilities in SE Alaska, the area is really not nearly as problematic for flying as its reputation. I recall back in the early 80's that the best approach in all of SE was a...

Flying Alaska (Part 8) - Gustavus AK to Friday Harbor WA

Fuel in KTN and then you only have a bit over 500nm to get to Friday Harbor. What is your max range? I have flown that route a dozen times, but with eight hours endurance, not much of an issue for me. I would go SIT to BFI or RTN or PAE.

Flying Alaska (Part 7) - Haines to Glacier Bay & Gustavus

I loved flying through the upper and lower notches. Sometimes could use it to beat Alaska Airlines in during the summer. Loved that run from JNU to GUS.

Flying Alaska (Part 7) - Haines to Glacier Bay & Gustavus

I flew out of Sitka for almost three years. Was in and out of all those airports. It was the most beautiful flying ever. The hop over the top from PAGS to PAJN is fabulous in good weather. The passengers all looked for goats.

    Navajo Cost of Ownership?

Maintaining the pressurization system, chasing leaks, and then every time you need to run lines in and out of the pressure vessel, you have to reseal and should be retesting the pressurization. It adds up. A pressurization test cart is something that most higher end shops have, but that means...

    Navajo Cost of Ownership?

A pressurized, 400 series Cessna will cost you a lot more in maintenance than will a Navajo. There is also a fair degree of difference in expense between a baby Navajo (PA-31-310) and a Chieftain (PA-31-350). The latter will burn 8-10 gph more than the former. The maintenance cost and...

    Logbook Legitimacy?

A small amount of padding one's logbook is very unlikely to be detected, but is insignificant in getting hired. A large amount of padding will be revealed in due time, often because the skills don't match the logbook.

Reminder - watch out for deer on landings at night!

Touched down one evening after a late night test flight and as soon as I did, I saw a large doe in the grass next to the runway. Being a large animal with a brain the size of a walnut, it streaked over and threw itself in to the left prop of the Navajo. It was a mess. After turning around and...

Questions about the aircraft selling process

An AD that costs $45 in parts and less than an hour labor is an issue? That is hysterical considering Beech costs. :)

Once you find out that the Comanche has no magnesium in the tail you won't look back.:) But can, and often has been, terminated by STC.
