GA transportation of (personal) firearms and ammo

That AOPA article on GA firearms is just as bananas as much of their other silliness. Oh Lordy… does anyone realize the amount of hunting and personal protection ammo carried on GA? There are a host of ATP type aircraft regulations, especially since guns and ammo must be brought through a...

500lb WWII American bomb explodes at Japanese airport

In the late 90’s I witnessed authorities disarming a WW2 250lb bomb uncovered in a front yard in Pacific Grove California on the flight path to the now closed Fort Ord Army base. The home owner dug it up after beating it with a pickaxe.

    Air-to-Air P-40 Warhawk

Beautiful. I've always liked the P40 more than the Mustang, though some might find that heresy. The P40 had better low altitude performance.

A brand new plane still not better than a 50+ year old Cessna 182

A few of the composite or composite fuselage/aluminum wing planes are so slippery they get close to 6 cylinder cruise performance with a 4 cylinder engine. Tough to beat the grunt of the O-470 and the like for climb performance and high density altitude work. Always thought the P2010 should...

What advice would you give someone for a CFI checkride?

Remember it is a rigged test! I tell new students this who are stressing about the oral exam and check ride. Easy to imagine their facial expression. It is rigged, and rigged in the students favor. They usually relax when they realize this truth after telling them "you already know the...

    GPS backup

You're actually also right. If GPS unavailable, Apple uses relative strength of cells towers to triangulate an approximate location. Easy to tell which, GPS is a pinpoint while relative tower strength is large circle sometimes small and sometimes several blocks large in depiction.

    GPS backup

It's "poor man's" ADS-B. The iPhone is sending GPS coordinates when pinged. GPS goes down so will "find my iPhone" unless it's in the same proximity of bluetooth range.

    Stratus transponder

You're all good. Being from Wyoming you're all grandfathered into the real pilots club. I fly through Casper once a year and stop for a burger, baked potato and a beer at The Fort. One of the best burger and baked potato I've ever had. All 3 times is was consistently good!

Why has Vashon sold so few Rangers, and will MOSAIC turn that around?

There’s a Vashon Ranger on our field, and like skyking said it won’t win any ramp appeal awards.

What is this symbol at PRB VOR?

Couldn't find (L) on the IFR Low Enroute chart legend used for the Paso Robles VOR. Curious who may know. I know (L) on the Airport identifier indicates pilot controlled lighting. Little stumped as to the 2 L's on the VOR.

    421C down Fairview, OR

With the aircraft making a jog to the left and reporting handling problems, wonder if he had lost or was loosing power on one engine. Agree with @3393RP that pilots should listen to their inner voice and take caution. It's part of basic risk management. We've heard other accident preflight...

Do you call when you're the unknown traffic

I usually use flight following, but sometimes not if it's evening and low traffic. Still like to monitor approach incase I need their help or more awareness around me. There were 2 occasions where I realized for fact certain ATC was talking about my ship. I got on air and said it's likely me...

    Drop-in 100LL Replacement "Impossible"?

Yes, the knock sensor has a narrow frequency range of vibration which is masked by other vibrations or "noise" in the system.
