RPM Drops and Recovery during flight

How about the throttle friction lock? Could the lever/knob be sliding from vibration? You're able to "recover", which suggests the throttle closing slightly.

How to almost die in the mountains

You're correct, found some other pics. Still think the video is fake. There were two people taking pictures. The stills in the news article are clearly of the actual plane and the ADSB track aligns with where it was. The phone video on the other hand just feels wonky to me. If that video is...

How to almost die in the mountains

Still think it's fake. The picture in the news article does appear to match N65440, but there's no place in the video that matches that still, nor any way to get a still of the resolution of any of the ones in the article. The ADSB track does appear to match and the speeds look reasonable, but...

    Class D trip yesterday

I'm based at a busy class D near DAB, so tons of training flights. The tower regularly gets mixed up on cleared "option" vs "full stop". They'd be giving out numbers to call hourly if a T&G happened on a cleared to land. Plus I can't imagine adding that to things to think about when pilots...

How to almost die in the mountains

The more I look at the video, the more it looks like an RC model to me.

Altitude Directives in VFR Flight Following

How about one that says they can't? Without digging into all the regs, Class D and E are controlled airspace and regs say you must follow ATC instructions. Obviously if that instruction puts you into a cloud or a mountain, then you can "unable", but otherwise you're supposed to.

    Minimum Oil Level

O-360 A4A. Capacity 8, minimum is not much (2?). Fill it to 6, refill at 5. Any more is corrosion resistance on the belly.

Altitude Directives in VFR Flight Following

You can tell ATC you are changing altitude under FF. "123XY, VFR descent to XXX to maintain clear of clouds". I've never had an issue with that using FF. Doing something dramatic without telling them is not the best idea. They are assuming you are maintaining heading and altitude, unless you...

PA28/32 Wing Spar AD - Show me the data!

And are ECI failures consistent with a risk of the wing falling off? I go back to there have only been 3 incidents since ever. There was a lot of rumbling about the EARU Arrow being mistreated. The pipeline patrol one back in the 80's was ridden very hard. While the statistical analysis is...

The older mountain bike thread but now a road bike review update

Rim brakes are great, except for two things - both related to long descents. 1. the pads can heat up and basically become useless. (see @Sac Arrow comment above) or 2. If you are descending a really long and steep descent like the Alps, they can heat up the rim and melt glue on tubeless tires or...

PA28/32 Wing Spar AD - Show me the data!

Think you also need to look at actual failures of the spar (all two of them) vs failures of the test. There were a lot of bad tests early on. An example were several that passed after the bolt hole was cleaned. The other would be MIF from improper bolt removal. There's a lot of noise in the...

Instrument approach: horrible energy management before flare

I was flying today in my Archer. Thinking of this thread, I flew a straight in (towered AP) and held 105kts, no flaps to 200 ft minimums following the approach glidepath. Easily turned off in 2000 feet, could have made less, but no taxiway. Think the last sentence of the OP is the key. "How do...

    Heart rate monitor watch question

I took a look at the website for that watch. That % is a pretty meaningless number. It looks at your pulse vs some theoretical optimum. It's a $35 watch with a pulse monitor if you touch it. I would ignore the %. A resting heart rate of 35 is pretty low unless you are a XC skier, or marathon...

    Altitude Readability on GTN 650

Just to be clear, approach plates can't be displayed on the 650, only the 750. You can have a map view that has fixes and altitudes.

NA - If I'm in an Uber and I open a beer.

From the interweb - I didn't fact check this but googled "open container law texas" "In Texas, there are limited circumstances where alcohol may legally be consumed in a vehicle. Can you drink in an Uber in Texas? It is legal to drink in an Uber, Lyft, taxi, or other motor vehicle designed...

NA - If I'm in an Uber and I open a beer.

Think it depends on the state. In some, for sure any open container is illegal. Rationale being the driver could just pass it to a passenger. Given Texas has drive through beer sales, maybe not so much there.

Instrument Rating Ground Course Recommendations? CFI Lament with Inst Pilot Rating Student

I think the distinction that @Clip4 is making is that you can't log the time taken in an online course. I think it's a distinction without a difference as completion of the courses and passing the quizzes does provide a certification to take the written. Seems excessively pendantic.

Comanche Quirk - How to solve it?

Piper quirk. Nav lights are on a dimmer switch for interior lights. Turn it past the "click", nav lights are on. Rotate the switch more and cabin lights come up slowly. Easy to have nav lights on and no cabin illumination. Actually, might be the instrument/panel lights on that switch, but same...
