To cross or not to cross?

KAPA in Colorado has something similar. At both ends of runway 17L/35R. The standard ATIS advises to “contact ground when runup complete.”

To cross or not to cross?

That solves part of it! Thanks for the color information.

To cross or not to cross?

Offhand, I would say if the instruction is to “taxi to 34R,” with nothing more, you may enter and exit the box. “Taxi to the runup area” would be different. So would an ATIS blurb instructing to contact Ground after run up. Real world, I walk up to a local CFI and ask what the local procedure...

    Instrument proficiency check

AATD or BATD? AATD, everything except the circling approach and landing from approach tasks. BATD, nothing. Both are clearly indicated in the LOAs which are available on the Redbird site.

How to enter a holding pattern?

Now, go to those hold questions. Draw it out and see how you do. And you can quiz yourself be looking at missed approaches where the hold is already depicted. If you’ve “got it,” you can pick the appropriate entry just by looking at it.

Safety Pilot - where to find those in need?

Unless that spouse is already at least a private pilot, those flying lessons don’t sound like “low cost.” :D And if a non-pilot, breaking regs can be expensive too.

How to enter a holding pattern?

BTW, you’ll notice that at this point I haven’t bothered to put in the hold. That’s because the direction of turns has nothing to do with those essential first two words of a holding clearance. Through the years, I’ve seen a surprisingly large number of comments by people who erroneously think...

    CFI Reinstatement Knowledge Tests???

@MauleSkinner quoted the reg. In terms of current certificates with an expiration date, at worst (a)(1) applies to those. But as I mentioned, I expect they’ll be treating the current “expiration date” as the end of the new “recent experience” period. They really should have come up with an...

How to enter a holding pattern?

You need to do one other thing and that’s to describe the hold in holding instruction terms. At least “Hold [direction]” part. That is where I see most of the problem with random holds. That picture just above? I’ve had people say it’s not “hold northwest. One even insisted repeatedly it was...

How to enter a holding pattern?

“hold northwest” means the inbound course is here. I don’t know if you are flying backwards :D

Safety Pilot - where to find those in need?

A regular flying buddy is a great thing to have. When I was in Colorado, my friend Chris and I flew together regularly. trading off safety pilot duties. About every other month, we would get together after work, fly a few approaches, and then go out to dinner. There are probably some other...

Safety Pilot - where to find those in need?

That's kind of why I asked whether @M.Sove was expecting some kind of benefit. Back in 2012, the Chief Counsel was asked whether a safety pilot is required to pay a pro rata share of expenses because the safety pilot is receiving "flight time" compensation. The specific answer was Section...

Safety Pilot - where to find those in need?

Yep. Local flying groups, whether online or offline, are usually the best bets. Sometimes, just walking around the ramp or hangars on a nice day when folks are washing their airplanes can lead to contacts. The open question is, are you trying to get paid or get some kind of benefit for these...

How to enter a holding pattern?

@Flyxaos There are two things you may have missed 1. the “fix” is not the VOR. The “fix” is a point in space 10 miles SE of the VOR in the 120 radial. 2. The cardinal direction of hold (”hold northwest”) always refers to the location of the inbound course relative to the fix. Not the...

    Instrument training…

That’s true. Situational awareness is not easy when you are learning and understandably focused on details. But it is a very important skill to develop.

How to enter a holding pattern?

I draw the clearance and my position with respect to it. The appropriate entry is obvious. I gave a lesson on this method with a pilot working on their instrument rating with someone else. A week or so later, their CFII presented a hold scenario in the ground. The pilot told them the entry...

    Clearance Delivery

Yep. that's the rule. But nothing says you can't call ahead of time from the ground to fit yourself in. which is why I mentioned a time I might call CD from the ground. Story: Back when Towered Colorado Air and Spaceport (KCFO) was simple nontowered "Front Range" (KFTG), pilots who wanted to...

    Instrument training…

Agreed. Although “visual presentation” may be in the mind of the beholder. It’s not as obvious as the situational awareness if a moving map but, from an old school standpoint, a CDI centered on 230 and a DG on 200 might be considered pretty “visual” by many.
