GNS430W and 530W - Failing to suspend when in a hold... how to fix the result

Great question. I think "easiest" is often in the mind of the beholder, and may depend on other parts of your SOP. These two ways have the same net effect. In both cases, once I realize I screwed it up, I turn outbound. Activating the hold once inbound: 1. Press to cursor 2. Scroll up two...

GNS430W and 530W - Failing to suspend when in a hold... how to fix the result

Well, you could just treat it as a random hold - a necessary and testable skill. Go direct to the holding fix and, in OBS mode, turn the CDI to the inbound course (or use CourseToWaypoint). But activating the hold once inbound again is probably a bit less workload. An ounce of prevention ("when...

    Meat eaters need not reply

Well before I ever heard the term "vegan," I fell in love with portabella mushroom burgers. But I don't understand vegan pretend meat like the impossible burger.

91.3 emergency authority - "deviate from any rule OF THIS PART" - practical effects?

It seems so sensible that a pilot with what the pilot thinks of as a non-critical issue is prohibited from the decision to head somewhere where it can be repaired. I would say that 98% of the pilots out there still think it's ok to bypass an unattended airport to get to somewhere where the issue...

91.3 emergency authority - "deviate from any rule OF THIS PART" - practical effects?

Not even a checklist issue. The FAA has interpreted 91.7 (b) ...The pilot in command shall discontinue the flight when unairworthy mechanical, electrical, or structural conditions occur. very strictly. The pilot must land "at the first available point consistent with the safe operation of...

    Instrument training…

That’s where it got confusing for me. I thought we were talking about a PFD failure. Being able to pull off a hood in VFR conditions makes many IFR emergencies VFR non-events.

91.3 emergency authority - "deviate from any rule OF THIS PART" - practical effects?

It is not. It was dropped based on the contents of the aircraft checklist.

IFR? In the clouds? To me the time to declare an emergency is as soon as I know the PFD is AFU. I might indicate that no precipitous action is required if I have a decent backup, but I am dealing with an equipment failure which should be reported to ATC (AIM 5-3-3) and makes the aircraft...

91.3 emergency authority - "deviate from any rule OF THIS PART" - practical effects?

Yes it comes up but it's rare. It's kinda part of the same concept as the interpretive gloss that the pilot can't take advantage of the protection if the pilot created the emergency. As someone said when I did a presentation on this years ago, the FAA can usually find some basis to claim the...

We're back to the same problem that existed when two different analog instruments gave conflicting information. Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose.

    Instrument training…

The overall good news is, with the modern equipment, most failures are annunciated. They, and strategies for dealing with them are discussed in both the Pilot Guide and the AFMS (which no one seems to read). The bad news is, what else it affects is very system specific. And with the G5, you are...

    Instrument training…

I agree. The practical problem from a checkride standpoint is that there are so many variations it would at worst require a DPE to understand every variation or, at best, lengthen the oral substantially. Take an extremely simple example. My club has two G1000 DA40s. PFD failure (“loss of...

    Helene relief flights

Are you being a little myopic? There are multiple delivery issues with multiple solutions. Yes, of course helicopters are necessary to ultimately get supplies to remote locations when roads are closed and runways inaccessible. But one of the things going on is people donating essentials from all...

FAA Drops Expiration Date from CFI

People who instruct still need an FIRC unless they are sending enough people for checkrides. One can be very active as an instructor without that. I think I recall what @STR8NLVEL is referring to and it was about weeding out instructors who give next to no dual at all. No flight reviews, no...

FAA Drops Expiration Date from CFI

I see three main items. 1. Replacing “expiration” with “currency”. If nothing else it saves plastic. 2. Expanding the FIRC recurrency window to include 3 months after (sort of like the 1st 6 months after instrument currency ends). 3 Pushing the WINGS program as another recurrence option.

Fatal Crash at First Flight, 9/28

Yes, I know it does. I posted a photo of part of it But I saw what I described - two landing attempts with the crash on the second one at 21:18:29Z. We may be describing the same thing. That last entry is after the base to final turn. Which makes sense - I’ve seen reports that the Cirrus hit a tree.
