What plane would you buy in my situation?

Gotta install a Herbs meter for that.

    Uncertified avionics repair

This should be the PoA motto.

Nan Chang CJ-6A mid-air LA County

Am interested to know what experienced military pilots think of this breakout procedure. I understand the theory of it. Pull up to establish vertical separation, then bank across top of lead. But as you pull up, you lose sight of lead unless you roll 90 degrees. At that point you are doing...

    Growler Down

Do the ejection seats have ELT beacons that provide some sort of electronic signature? In other words, would the Navy know whether the crew punched out or not?

Nan Chang CJ-6A mid-air LA County

Wing was on Lead's right. Detachment plan was for Wing to pull up and bank left. Across Lead's path. What could go wrong? Prelim is lacking a few details that should have been available from the surviving pilot. Was formation abeam or echelon? Fingertip or route?

    Manifold pressure(aircraft) vs engine vacuum(automotive)

That is half the equation. The other is how much the throttle plate restricts air flowing into the manifold to meet the demand of cylinder suction. At WOT, less restriction = higher pressure. At idle, more restriction = lower pressure. MAP tells you how much air you are allowing the engine...

    Manifold pressure(aircraft) vs engine vacuum(automotive)

A lot of pilots never really learn what a MAP gauge tells them. Most PPL training aircraft are fixed pitch and have no MAP gauge. With no hands on application, many students learn just enough to pass the written, then flush it. Thus, many pilots first encounter MAP when they transition to a...

    Big Hangar Roof Questions

Our airfield just took a direct hit from Hurricane Milton. All steel hangars survived intact. 5 of the 8 wood frame hangars were destroyed. No comparison.

Is Broken at 1300 considered VFR?

How you are going to determine the base of the cloud? How is the FAA going to determine the base of the cloud?

Is Broken at 1300 considered VFR?

Excessive attention to regs sometimes runs counter to safe decision making. He is a VFR pilot in marginal weather. The ceiling is getting worse. He already diverted once. He has a clear visual on his alternate. The safe decision is get on the ground. The unsafe decision would be to divert...

Is Broken at 1300 considered VFR?

500 below clouds is a visual estimate and mostly unenforceable.

Is Broken at 1300 considered VFR?

In deteriorating weather conditions, do what you gotta do to get on the ground safely. If ATC tells you the field is VFR and clears you to land, nobody from the FAA is going to second guess you later.

Mechanic in Annual Inspection Replaced ELT that hadn't expired and charged me for it

Use your grown up skills. Talk to the man, try to sort it out. Maybe there is a good explanation. Maybe it was a mistake. If it was an honest mistake, consider accepting the cost. Most A&P's don't make a ton of money, and most FBO's are not high margin businesses. Some goodwill on your...

Tach to Hobbs conversion for logging

FWIW, I just checked my aircraft log for this year. I have 63.8 Hobbs and 59.3 Tach. Ratio is 1.075.

Tach to Hobbs conversion for logging

Plenty of Hobbs, including mine, are wired to an oil pressure switch.

    Florida in Crosshairs Again…. Milton

As reported, my plane is unscathed. Those port-o-hangars are stout. Mine is more rust than steel at this point. Turns out only one aircraft was destroyed, with another 6ish damaged but repairable. 5 of the old wooden hangers collapsed. None of the steel structures gave way. The shade...

    Florida in Crosshairs Again…. Milton

Initial report is my plane and hangar are fine. FD77 is about 30% destroyed, with 6 to 10 aircraft destroyed or substantially damaged, but most surviving. It took pretty much a direct hit from the worst winds.

    Florida in Crosshairs Again…. Milton

Minimal damage at my home, just a lot of limbs down. Track came pretty close. I think we were in the band that got the worst winds. Very lucky it weakened so much. Waiting for news of the airfield.
