    Commendation to ATC

I’ve been a big fan of the controllers I’ve dealt with, and that has held true now for the 21 years I’ve been flying, and before. Noted the reference to KFUL - I’d listen to Fullerton Tower (119.1, it was) while working in the yard - planes lined-up for 24 flew right over me. Then, at the...

    How is the Piper Comanche?

Wait - is that capacity, or opening size? :p

    How is the Piper Comanche?

I love my Bonanza, wouldn't take for it (now), but if I'd found the right Comanche when I was shopping, I'd have it today. When I thought I had a shot at a sweet C-model PA24, I was floating - but it fell through. Robust, quick, efficient and (can't hide it) wider than a Bo by a useful...

    Garmin or Avidyne with Dynon

I have the Avidyne 440, and have been very pleased with it. The difference in install burden, when replacing a Garmin 430, is very substantial - a savings of several thousand dollars when you choose the Avidyne. edit: Nothing there bagging on Garmin - good products, outstanding innovation.

State (VT) owned hangar ground leases doubled overnight. What's up with that?

I dealt with this exact issue at a remote Texas airport several years ago. The airport sponsor tried to impose “catch-up” increases just as the OP described Vermont’s, and when challenged on it, they wrote (in a letter) that they had “…gotten the opinion of San Antonio lawyers…” on the subject...

    Bonanza V-Tail or Mooney M20x or ??

Your call. Utterly false. One should check for corrosion on Bonanzas, just as one should check for corrosion on every other airplane. Bonanza tail feathers are no more prone to corrosion than any others, but the ruddervators are magnesium, and bear strict scrutiny. Proper maintenance yields...

What do you consider “scud running”?

I have turned into a weather ***** in my advancing age; that, and the fact I am flying a modestly faster airplane than once I flew. For me, in the Bonanza, it's anything under 2k - too many random towers out there these days. I liked the answer @SixPapaCharlie (BrYan) gave, too.

The greatest aviation movie of all time!

...never to mention that, when the airplane was torched, the 12-cylinder Rolls Royce Merlin engine evaporated, leaving only a steel rod with a prop on it...

    Air-to-Air Piper Comanche

Jack, your skills are anything but ordinary; I have never seen mediocre work from you. Is that Kranston Kincaid's plane? Methinks he had a date with a paintshop recently. That man's an artist in his own way, too. -- Please, keep 'em coming! I hope (someday) to make my bird pretty enough...

    TKM has closed down

I believe you are correct; it was going to be a very nice, software-based radio, that would slide right in the tray of the 155, with a color touchscreen and various other nice features, the best the feature of which would have been the fact that it was plug-compatible with the 155. I think they...

Sales or use tax in COLORADO?

Generally, a “use tax” is a means for a state to capture tax on an asset not subject to the state’s sales tax. So, for example, you bought a plane in a state with no sales tax, then bring it to a state which does have a sales tax. They cannot charge you sales tax, because the sale did not...

Looking for Basicmed Dr. in DFW

I was going to recommend Dr. McElya as well - great guy, runs a very friendly practice. If you drive up expecting typical “Doc-in-the-Box” service, you’ll be very pleasantly surprised. Good outfit. But be forewarned: Dr. Mac never walks anywhere - he runs. So, look out!

    Flying with pets

We used to bring Valentine the Wonder Rat with us in the Bo all the time - about 1.3 hours each way, and she handled it quite well. She'd jump right in and, as soon as we took off, she'd figure out, "Oh, this again," and curl up to nap. As soon as ae started down to land, she'd perk-up, stand...
