    Flightaware security breach

Nah, the hackers responsible should be held in stocks in the public square and then punished severely. Same for the spam call overlords.

Drone at 1000 feet in the San Francisco Bay Area

By law - but some people don't follow the laws, unfortunately. Obviously, that means we should ban all drones.

    Cheap fixer upper 172

Up until the point of purchase, this is usually true, but sometimes a qualified mechanic wants to invest money into "bones" because they then know exactly what they have afterwards. I flew a "cheap fixer upper" Cessna 150 that a local shop bought and then completely refurbished and it was quite...

    Dan Gryder Lockheed Electra Crash

I've seen someone try to put the gear down after a gear up... it was comical seeing the tailwheel come down... but I honestly doubt that happened in this accident. Maybe, maybe someone did try to lock the tailwheel after they swerved, but there wasn't a lot of time and I doubt that they were in...

School Me On Short Wing Pipers

Compared to Mooneys and 120s, yeah, but if you compare them to their near peers - a Colt to a Cessna 150, and a Pacer to a Cessna 170, they actually stack up as pretty decent little airplanes. The Colt is a tad faster, roomier, and can carry more and go farther than most 150s. The Pacer is also...

    Opinions sought

He's not wrong. If you pay attention and learn what he's teaching you, this is a good way to start. Back in my 5C1 days I tried to get every student to start in the Cub.

    Gamebird, 4th of July

I've had a ride in a Gamebird. Pretty capable airplane. Followed Gamebird West and interacted on Instagram. Pretty sad deal, he didn't seem like a careless kind of guy. .

    Congressional DJI Drone Ban

I'd be unhappy if my Mavic 2 Pro is suddenly an illegal thing. Mind you, I've got genuine concerns about the Chinese, but it should be up to the consumer to use it responsibly, like every other potentially surveilling piece of Chinese electronics we currently use. Mobile phones, anyone?

    Working on CFI - Advice?

I would say try to find someone who been instructing for maybe 10 years and ask them to give you examples of how the fundamentals of instruction apply in a real world settings.

Aircrew (non-pilot) Roles other than Civil Air Patrol

Some pipeline patrol companies have observers, and some aerial photography outfits have photographers... with a commercial pilot in the right seat, or have crewmembers running camera or other electronic equipment in the back. Oh, you said non-profit. Nevermind.

Prop strike after going off runway on landing - does it count as "substantial damage"?

All the old timers that I used to fly with down in San Antonio, where I learned to fly tailwheel seemed to think that all of the stuff included that definition is essentially what happens in a ground loop and that the FAA was aware of how many ground loops generally took place.

    Supreme Court: Chevron Deference

Nope. They just tried to reign in the 2A stuff with one of the recent rulings. They'll find a way to keep it from damaging their broader interests. A comprehensive win won't happen until mass ideological sensibility returns to the general populace, and they've still got the education system in...

Is ATP CTP a cash grab?

I’ve been making applications since December and it’s definitely a rough patch for jobs. I agree that at this point it looks like you might have to pay for it, just to be considered. My problem is that it’s extremely difficult to take a full week off.

    CFI Responsibility

Having been in an "accident" - with a student, there's definitely room for nuance. It's not always assumed that the CFI is at fault, although there is responsibility. For instance, if you could document that you taught the lesson properly, the student responded properly, for a person to...
