Am I too big to be a CFI?

One thing that might help is getting in-ear headsets that don't have a band over the top of your head. That will give you another inch of space. Otherwise it's doable.

The cynic in me says it makes good YouTube content and clicks=cash.

    Joe_B1 Gone West

Thanks for sharing. Always sad to loose a member of the POA family. It sure sounds like he loved flying his Archer.

    Ingalls Field VA 5 dead

Looks like it came up short. I’ve flown into HSP a few times, mostly flying the ILS 25. With the winds coming from the west, they’re whipping right over the ridge causing a HUGE downdraft 9n short final. While I was in a PA32, I wouldn’t want want to fly in up there in those conditions.

AOPA Pilot Protective Services article on SI to Basic Med

That was true in the past. But now, as long as the certificate has expired, they have no grounds for withdrawing the SI. The airman is making it clear that they intend to transition to BasicMed after the medical certificate expires. Could they withdraw if they get your letter before your...

91.146 charitable flight, have I got this right?

School charity flights are exactly why this reg exists. Prior to 2007, in order to properly do this you were supposed to petition for an exemption. You are correct that even though you don’t make any money, or even get any money, the passenger paid for the flight so the expectation is that...

Letter to the FAA re Digital Clock for IFR

I guess we’ll have to send a letter to the Chief Counsel inquiring as to why they stopped issuing legal interpretations…

Letter to the FAA re Digital Clock for IFR

The ironic part of this thread is that the chief counsel's office will most certainly punt this letter to flight standards as a policy question. Note that since 2019, the FAA has issued 11 legal interpretations total. Compare that with the prior years when they issued 40-100 or so interps per...

    Honeycomb Alpha Yoke Problem

lol. I just bought one for my son in December because that was the good yoke. We'll see how it does, I guess.

AOPA Pilot Protective Services article on SI to Basic Med

I'll be honest that I was genuinely surprised that a physician's office was proactive enough to send medical records without the patient's prompting; I feel like I typically have to beg and plead to get that done. Nonetheless, probably not a bad idea to inform a "helpful" medical practice to...

AOPA Pilot Protective Services article on SI to Basic Med

I read that article too. There have been a few situations where AMCD (Aerospace Medical Certification Division, or commonly referred as "Oklahoma City") inadvertently withdrew the Special Issuance (SI) after the expiration of the medical certificate. While done in error, a couple situations I'm...

    Customs trouble

Yep. I cleared US customs from Canada once at Lubec ME, a 2,000 foot grass strip with literally nothing else there other than a windsock. I did so because Eastport ME, were I usually cleared, wasn't open on the weekends. I called ahead, gave my ETA and all was good. Left Halifax and made the...

    Medical cert/DPE checkride

Yep, the requirements of 61.23(c)(3) and 61.113(i) are fair game if you show up for a check ride under BasicMed.

    Medical cert/DPE checkride

For the BasicMed 8700-2 Comprehensive Medical Examination Checklist, the DPE can ask to see the last page with the physician's signature. You are correct that the DPE does not need to see sections 1 and 2.

    Henning gone west

I noticed his last medical was six years ago in 2018. I can’t help but wonder if he avoided mental health treatment to maintain his (or an intent to reapply for a) medical certificate so he could continue random piloting gigs. Base on what’s being reported, there was definitely something going...

    Students are "Learners" now...........

Sorry, I failed in my attempt to use people-first language and probably should have said "people-who-operate-aircraft certificate"s in lieu of "airman certificates"...the latter a term of art that is both sexist and and unnecessarily labels us as full of air.

    Students are "Learners" now...........

Just to stir the pot I'm going to petition the FAA to add preferred pronouns to our people who operate aircraft certificates.

    Students are "Learners" now...........

Rather than invent a new civil term "air mission", I wish FAA administrator Steve Dickson would have just turned NOTAM from an acronym to a simple word "notam", defined as notifications that people operating airplanes need to know about. Kinda like the word "radar", which hasn't been an acronym...
